SAVORING A MAJOR VICTORY, AN OVERJOYED PRESIDENT BUSH RETURNED TO THE WHITE HOUSE FROM CAMP DAVID ... TO CELEBRATE PASSAGE OF THE BIGGEST TAX CUT IN TWO DECADES.

(SOT: PRESIDENT BUSH)

(NAT - SENATE VOTE) - 12:45:01

"The Tax Reconciliation Act of 2001 is agreed to."
BY A VOTE OF 58 TO 33, THE SENATE PASSED THE ONE-POINT-THREE FIVE TRILLION DOLLAR TAX CUT PACKAGE ... SHORTLY AFTER IT WON FINAL APPROVAL IN THE HOUSE.
UNDER THE BILL, SINGLE TAXPAYERS WILL RECEIVE A REFUND OF UP TO 300-DOLLARS THIS YEAR. SINGLE PARENTS WILL GET BACK AS MUCH AS 500-DOLLARS, AND MARRIED COUPLES -- SIX-HUNDRED DOLLARS.
LAWMAKERS SAY THE CHECKS WILL BE IN THE MAIL BY THIS SUMMER.

(SOT: SEN. CHARLES GRASSLEY/R-IOWA, FINANCE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN) -

11:55:16 "The message to taxpayers is this -- substantial tax relief is on the way. The government will ease its grip on your wallet."
THE PACKAGE WILL CONTINUE TO CUT TAXES OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS. IT WILL ALSO ABOLISH THE ESTATE TAX, EASE THE SO-CALLED MARRIAGE PENALTY, AND ALLOW FOR MORE CONTRIBUTIONS TO RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS.
BUT DEMOCRATS WHO OPPOSE THE PLAN SAY THE CUTS ARE SIMPLY TOO LARGE ... AND WILL ULTIMATELY HURT THE COUNTRY.

(SOT: SEN. TOM DASCHLE/SENATE MINORITY LEADER) -12:14:13

"Most sadly, what this means is that we could be back into the days of debt not into the not too distant future ... all because many could not find the prudence and the balance to limit their appetite for tax cuts."

(STANDUP)

PRESIDENT BUSH NOW PLANS ON SIGNING THE BILL INTO LAW DURING A MAJOR CEREMONY. BUT THE CELEBRATING MAY NOT LAST LONG. DEMOCRATS ARE VOWING TO REVISIT THE TAX ISSUE ... AS THEY PREPARE TO TAKE BACK CONTROL OF THE SENATE.
