((Botetourt County looks like it should be pronounced "Botetort" to folks who've just moved here or are passing through.
One possible explanation for why it's not is rooted in Virginia history, according to the acting reference librarian at the Rockbridge Regional Library (Angela Watkins).
"It had been customary in some dialects of southern British English, in the fifteenth century, to drop the "r" sound before a consonant...Lord Botetourt was the governor of Virginia during 1768-1770. In eastern Virginia cultural circles, this is how his name was pronounced, and that pronunciation has lasted through all these years. As for Staunton, it was laid out in 1748 and was named in honor of Lady Staunton, the wife of colonial governor Gooch. Here, too, the pronunciation probably holds over from earlier southern British dialect that shortened vowels...As you can see, both of these pronunciations are far from being "uneducated"; indeed they have their origins in the highest educated and cultured circles of colonial Virginia. To use any other pronunciation would not only mark one as an upstart, but an outsider as well."
A viewer from Roanoke (Gene Stuckey) who didn't see our recent series on eminent domain,
"...got the impression that it was primarily slanted towards what many are led to believe is the victim of eminent domain. The law of eminent domain was founded on the basis of protecting the TAXPAYER from greedy opportunists...The news media continuously compounds the problem of eminent domain by giving the impression that it is VDOT or City Council or local government money. It is not their money, it is my money and your money and everyone who pays taxes money."
