Altavista and Rocky Mount will lose hundreds of jobs as Lane Furniture announces a merger.

Furniture Brands International purchased Lane and announced today it will close Lane's three manufacturing facilities and its headquarters in Altavista.
Consolidation of the two companies begins immediately and will be complete by the end of the year.

Keith, the railroad had offered the 1218 for display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Though the deal has some conditions that must still be satisfied, it appears the vintage engine will soon be joining the 611 at the transportation museum.

((Built in the Roanoke shops in the 1940s, the 1218 was restored to working condition in the mid- 80s. It has been in storage since the railroad ended its steam excursion program in 1994.
It was last seen in public last August when photographer O. Winston Link posed with the locomotive for a feature in Vanity Fair Magazine.
Link wanted the engine for a museum devoted to his photography that is planned for the old N&W passenger station, and the donation of the 1218 won't take effect until the organizers of that project reach agreement with the late photographer's estate.
City Manager Darlene Burcham says she is optimistic that will happen.

The plan to replace Victory Stadium also came up today... two weeks after city council voted to build a new stadium and amphitheater near the civic center.
Alvin Hudson said he doesn't know how he would have voted if illness hadn't kept him away from the meeting.

But Keith, today he told his colleagues on council he was disappointed and hurt that after such a lengthy and controversial debate, they went ahead and made the decision without him.

A Roanoke County murder case has been resolved after 10 years in the courts.
Today, Frank Pennington pled guilty to second-degree murder.

The 61-year-old agreed today to serve nearly 12 years, under a plea agreement, for the 1991 slaying of Bonnie Sue Mullins.
A jury had already been selected to start his THIRD trial today. The first was overturned by an appellate court when new evidence surfaced and the second ended in a mistrial.
Witnesses had said Pennington shot Mullins over a drug deal gone bad.

Lady Luck didn't smile on a Botetourt County woman convicted of stealing 18-hundred dollars worth of lottery tickets from her employer.
Judith Peters was caught on videotape taking the tickets from the Cavalier Food Mart, where she worked.
Today, she was sentenced to three years probation.
She also has to pay back the money.
The store's owners say two employees took 38-THOUSAND dollars worth of lotto tickets, but they could not catch them at it.
The Cavalier Food Mart says it's closing as a result of the loss.

"Cat" Emanuel was told by animal control in April she had to find a new home for her pets, because her place was unhealthful. She boarded the cats at Tipton Ridge Veterinary Center, but now can't afford to pay the 5-thousand dollar bill to get them out. Emanuel says she tried to take them out a couple weeks after boarding them.

Earley's putting the positive spin on it.

Three teens accused of beating their counselor at the Arcadia Leadership Academy have been indicted by a grand jury.

Jerome Hayes, Brandon Whittle and Tahir (Tuh-HEAR) Austin will be tried as adults for the March 5th attack on a counselor at the home for troubled kids.
Allen Hipes says that he was driving the boys out to eat, when one attacked him with the metal leg of a bunk bed.


He says they also stole the van he was driving.
The teens were later caught with the van in Martinsville.

A 25 year old time capsule was unearthed and its contents shared with students during an assembly.

Agassi's opponent in the quarters will be tenth-seed Sebastien Grosjean, a straight sets winner over clay-court specialist Galo Blanco.
