The producers is an unshackled, politically incorrect blend of singing, dancing and slapstick comedy -- that was breaking records long before last night's awards.

(LEE COWAN ON CAM: )

"Its success dwarfed just about everything else on Broadway this year -- and that was hard to do. Even without "The Producers" -- Broadway saw higher ticket revenues -- and higher attendance this year -- and there was a lot to see."

(NARR:)

"Proof" -- a play that already won a Pulitzer -- also won for best play - and its star, Mary Louise Parker won for best actress.

"The Invention of Love" brought home two awards-- but even in victory -- "The Producers" had become a tender joke among colleagues fighting for attention.
