Four airplanes sprayed nearly 20-thousand acres today near the Cave Spring and Bent Mountain areas.
Officials say Gypsy Moths attacked and destroyed thousands of trees in Alleghany and Bedford counties last year.
Without spraying, officials say the insects would head for Roanoke County this year.

Officials say the pesticide is NOT toxic -- in fact it doesn't kill anything.
It works by disrupting the moths' reproductive systems.
So no need to worry about humans or animals coming into contact with the spray.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and the U-S Forest service are likely to continue spraying for the next three to six days.

The audit commission's interest in the size of severance packages came after Gilmore gave Linda Byrd-Harden 49-thousand dollars when she resigned in the wake of mismanagement at the state Department of Minority Business Enterprise.
The report released today also revealed that former state Superintendent of Public Instruction Paul Stapleton was given an 80 thousand dollar severance package.
Stapleton's package was for transition assistance and to do a study on rural schools.

But the University of Florida student newspaper and a "Deland Florida based website" want access to the photos.
A judge heard testimony today aimed at reversing a court order sealing the photos and he may rule on the constitutionality of a new state law barring access to such records.
Opponents says the law is too vague.

The volcano is fewer than 25 miles away from one town in Sicily- so most residents there are watching this volcano carefully.
The last major volcanic eruption here took place in 1992- when streams of lava threatned 7-thousand residents.
At that time military personnel set up explosions to divert the lava flow.
By the way, the name Etna comes from Greek.. meaning "I burn."
