(TRACK) LOCATOR: Lusaka, Zambia

It happens only once every year and a half - the incredible natural beauty of the moon completely covering the sun - for a total eclipse. This morning, hundreds of tourists in the African country of Zambia saw the eclipse come full circle first partially covering the sun creating a brilliant color of red then in complete daylight making the day go dark. Scientists say the moon covering the sun allows them to see the outer rim of the sun -- or the corona -- more clearly.

(SOT - ) Craig Deforest - Solar Physicist

The corona is central to a century-old mystery why it is so hot and we really dont know. And the key to that is understanding the detailed structure of the corona.

(TRACK)

Scientists already know the corona is 200 times hotter than the surface of the sun. But other mysteries remain - like why certain explosions happen on the sun that can damage things here on Earth.

(SOT - Deforest )

We would like to understand that process and predict them and avoid damage to our satellites, cell phone networks, and our power grid.

(TRACK)

Total eclipses occur over a different part of the Earth each time they happen. For people in the U-S unfortunately there will be a wait.

(SOT - ) Beth Brown - Astronomer

We had a partial eclipse of the sun this past Christmas Day and the next total eclipse of the sun that can be seen from the U-S will happen in the year 2017.
