The San Francisco Giants outfielder clubbed his 38th of the season in the eighth inning of last night's game at San Diego. Bonds eclipsed the record of 37 home runs before the break.
It was set by Reggie Jackson in 1969, and matched by Mark McGwire three years ago.
It was his 30th home run at Qualcomm Stadium, the most ever by a visiting player.
Bonds' 59 home runs against the Padres are his most against any team.
Bonds still has 17 more games before the midsummer classic. He's on pace to smash the single-season mark of 70 home runs, set by McGwire in 1998.
