It's about to become the first state to ban talk on a hand held while behind the wheel.
That could be a sign for things to come in other states-

Next Monday, the city will implement a new system that will streamline the collection schedule and add recycling services. It will also end alley collection for many residents.

If some Roanokers aren't happy with the move away from alley collection, city officials believe residents will ultimately appreciate changes that are designed to simplify the collection schedule and improve recycling services city-wide without adding manpower or equipment.

The new plan will create four sectors... with the railroad and I 581, US220 serving as the dividing lines. Crews will work the northwest sector on Monday, northeast on Tuesday, southeast on Wednesday, and southwest on Thursday.
Roanokers will have more opportunities to recycle... with cans and bottles one week, and mixed paper the next...

Authorities describe a 19 year old accused of murdering his mom and cousin as Ornery, obstinate and down right mean.

They're describing 19-year-old James Edward Gibson.

Gibson told 9-1-1 dispatchers Sunday morning that he stabbed and killed his mother and cousin with a bayonet.
A Franklin County High School Resource Officer says Gibson was frequently truant form school, had behavioral problems and abused drugs.
But the Deacon of Gibson's church says he remembers Gibson as a child who attended Sunday school and mowed lawns for money.

An autopsy revealed today that both Gibson's mother and cousin died from multiple cut and stab wounds.

Sheriff's deputies say the assailants fired as many as fifty rounds into the house.
22-year old Douglas Edward Witcher died instantly.

State Police say 18 year old Christopher Jason Green of Clover was heading north when he ran off the left side of the road.
State Police say he hit and killed 76 year old Louis Buldin and 62 year old Henry Albert Welch, both of Clover.
Christopher Green was treated and released from Halifax Regional Hospital.
No charges have been filed.

The mystique of Tennessee women's college basketball graced the Roanoke Valley last night.
Pat Summitt has led the Lady Vols to 6 national championships and has a record of 728 wins and 150 losses in her 26 years at the University of Tennessee.

But last night, Tiki and Ronde Barber battled it out on the auction block.

The Barbers dined with the Roanoke Valley Sports Club and after dinner auctioned off signed NFL helmets.

One of the University of Virginia's oldest collegiate sports not only has been saved from near extinction but the UVa baseball program is also about to get a serious facelift.

UVA has received two million dollars in gifts to launch a four million dollar construction project which will update the school's baseball facility.

You may remember, at the end of April UVA officials announced they were thinking of cutting baseball scholarships.


An outpouring of support from the alumni and parents helped save the program.
Now the planned improvements to the baseball facility include, a canopied grandstand with two thousand chairback seats, six to eight skyboxes which will be up for lease, and stadium lights.

Mark Fry, the golf pro at the Homestead shot a five under par round to win today's Mid Atlantic head professional championship in Bel Air, Maryland. Fry shot a 104 total in the 27 hole tournament at the Maryland golf and country club.
