Charges were brought against Evans Jessee after five complaints were filed.
The defense argued that the once well-respected Roanoke lawyer is an alcoholic and had no recollection of embezzling thousands of dollars from his clients.

The Commonwealth Attorney says Jessee became an alcoholic after taking the money .. and that's no excuse.
Over the last three years, Jessee has been in four different rehabilitation facilities.

Judge Dow Owens sentenced the 70 year old to ten years in prison for each felony count. But he suspended the sentence for 10 years on the condition that Jessee does NOT drink any alcohol.

One person is dead and another injured after a drive-by shooting in Halifax County early this morning. It happened in the Meadeville community around 1 o'clock. Police say the assailants fired more than 50 shots into the home. 22-year old Douglas Edward Witcher was killed by multiple gunshots. 20-year old Luther Powell was shot FOUR times - but his injuries do NOT appear life threatening. Police are investigating, but say they have no suspects or motive at this time.

A Franklin County teenager is scheduled for arraignment tomorrow, on charges he fatally stabbed his mother and cousin over the weekend .. with a bayonet.
Police say he told them he just snapped. Now James Edward Gibson faces two counts of capital murder.

The county Sheriff's office sealed off this home on Cooks Knob Road in the Waidsboro section of the county .. after they found two people stabbed to death inside.
Officials were led to the home when the 19 year old Gibson called police saying they were all gone and he was at home alone.

When officers went inside the home they found Gibson's mother, 40 year old Annette Gibson and his cousin 30 year old George Patterson stabbed to death with a bayonet.

About 35-thousand people have been evacuated from villages surrounding the volcano, which seems to have temporarily calmed.

Meanwhile, airports are closed today due to lack of visibility and danger from flying ash and rocks.
