As people get older --particularly women -- they run the risk of suffering compression fractures in the spine.
It's often very painful --and over time - fractures can affect a person's posture.

But as Health Check Reporter Joy Sutton tells us - a new procedure now available in the Roanoke Valley can do more than just relieve the pain.

((IT'S THE ONLY PROCEDURE OUT THERE THAT HAS THE CHANCE RIGHT NOW OF NOT ONLY TREATING THE PAIN BUT RESTORING SOME OF THE HEIGHT LOSS IN THE COMPRESSION FRACTURE)) [RUNS13]

Pain relief occurs in between 80 to 90 percent of patients - and for a portion - it will also restore height. Doctor Mathis says the procedure is basically safe. The most common side effect is leakage of the cement outside the bone - but that is rare.
