((As martial arts movies go, "Kiss of the Dragon" has all the requisite elements. Lots of violence, delivered in a variety of ways; and an adept and in this case appealing hero, Johnny, played by Jet Li. What it also has unfortunately is Bridget Fonda looking uncomfortable in a role she can't seem to quite figure out.
Jet Li is a policeman from China who is sent to Paris to help uncover a heroin smuggling ring. But it is all a set up. Inspector Richard, the Paris policeman he has been assigned to help, is a bad guy, a really bad guy. He is involved not only in smuggling, but prostitution and other vices. Inspector Richard has brought in Johnny-as he calls him- to take the fall for a murder. But Johnny escapes. Against incredible odds and with lots of thugs searching Paris for him, he manages to steal an incriminating tape and at the same time, tries to help a prostitute rescue her daughter from Richard's clutches.
Most of the movie involves bad guys trying in a variety of ways to kill the elusive Johnny and Johnny getting the better of them, most of the time, anyway. He uses some intriguing weapons including billiard balls, hot irons, laundry hampers and acupuncture needles. Unlike some martial arts heroes, Johnny gets wounded and winded.
There is nothing new here, but those who like lots of martial arts action will enjoy it. They won't enjoy Fonda.
