It was the ending many feared WOULDN'T happen. This weekend - Jennifer Barker is home safe - after she was missing more than a week... allegedly held captive by a man she had filed at least SEVEN restraining orders against. Dewy Lee Summerlin was cornered by police in Franklin County Friday night - where authorities say he turned the gun on himself after a shootout. Summerlin's teen-aged son - who was also found with Summerlin and Barker - is now facing charges. Jennifer Barker told News 7 about her harrowing ordeal... though she did NOT want to go on camera. Kate Weidaw reports.

Every year about 15-thousand Americans contract lyme disease. It's a bacterial disease spread by infected ticks. [tape 501-12, 20:04]
The problem is that the deer tick --which is commonly known to spread lyme disease --is very tiny. It's less than a third of the size of the common dog tick --so many people don't even notice it or realize they've been bitten.
Some signs of lyme disease include a skin lesion --that forms at the site of the bite --it usually gets bigger and looks like a bull's eye.
Other indicators are flu-like symptoms, fatigue, fever, headache, stiff neck, and muscle or joint pain.

if the Roanoke Express ever doubted fan support - they don't now -- after around a hundred turn out at demonstrations yesterday. The story still ahead...

Firefighters responded to the blaze at Feather Road just about an hour ago and found the barn engulfed in flames... At one point the blaze was spreading along the ground to nearby woods - but firefighters were able to put out the flames before it reached the woods. Authorities aren't sure yet what sparked the fire... but they think it MAY have been caused by a lightning strike.

Twenty- four hours from now, Carey Harveycutter will be breathing a sigh of relief.
This year's 11-day run of the Salem Fair will be history and Harveycutter and his staff will be able to relax... but just for a while.
Joe Dashiell followed Harveycutter through the fairgrounds last week, and he's the subject of this week's Virginia Profile.

There's always something to do during an 11-day event that brings 350- thousand people to the grounds of the Salem Civic Center.
What started as a small local event 14 years ago has grown into the second largest fair in Virginia... the largest free fair on the east coast.
[SOT 23:28:48]
[IN Q=It's a tremendous difference]

Harveycutter has been working at the civic center since he was a sophomore in high school. He learned the ropes from Jack Dame, and now presides over a civic center complex that includes the fairgrounds, Memorial Baseball Stadium, and the Salem Football Stadium.
It's a role he relishes.

But keeping it all running smoothly can be a challenge... and as the fair winds toward its conclusion, he's quick to share the credit with a full-time staff, part-timers hired just for the event, and the other Salem city employees who pitch in to help.
[SOT]
[IN Q=If it wasn't for the 20 people full time]

((IF IT WASN'T FOR THE 20 PEOPLE FULL TIME UP HERE BEHIND ME GETTING THE JOB DONE, THERE WOULDN'T BE A FAIR. THERE WOULDN'T BE A HORSE SHOW OR ANYTHING ELSE UP HERE. THEY'RE THE ONES THAT MAKE IT WORK. AND THEY'RE THE ONES WHO SHOULD GET THE CREDIT.)) [RUNS :12]
[OUT Q=who should get the credit.]

With a busy summer season ahead they won't get much rest. Harveycutter plans to visit the Ohio and Wisconsin state fairs to scout out new entertainment. And he's already making plans for the 15th edition of the Salem Fair that will open for business on July 3rd, 2002.

In sports, Dale Earnhardt Junior and Michael Waltrip traded places in Daytona finishing one-two in the Pepsi 400 last night. Back in February in the Daytona 500 it was a Waltrip-Earnhardt Junior finish.
Last night's race was the first at the track since Dale Earnhardt's death and needless to say an emotional win for Junior.

Sterling Marlin started on the pole and he was the leader after 7 laps of the race.
But Dale Earnhardt Junior had the strong car he covered the field and was leading with 133 laps to go.
Then with just over 70 laps to go Michael Waltrip moved into the picture he would battle Mike Skinner for the second spot.
Moments later the first caution would fly when Andy Houston hits the wall in turn four.
Right before the final pit stop several cars including Sterling Marling, Jeff Gordon and Mike Skinner crashed in turn 4 bringing out the caution with 19 to go.
Another caution slowed the race but Little E came from six back with six to go working his way through the traffic to win the Pepsi 400.

The third annual Stone Soul Picnic brought a variety of music to the park... Anything from rap, jazz and blues, and local church choirs. And anyone who went with an empty stomach - had plenty of food to keep them going. Organizers say the event brings the community together.
