Officials believe Horace Beasely of Gretna jumped overboard when the ship caught fire at an Army terminal in North Carolina.

A crew of about 40 was on board the SS Edward Carter when the fire broke out yesterday. The blaze was contained to the engine room-- where a crew member from Florida was found dead. The Edward Carter hauls ammunition and other cargo and can carry about 5 million pounds of explosives and ammunition.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

A facelift for a bridge in Rockbridge County is more than just a makeover...

The Virginia Department of Transportation is renovating the bridge over the Calfpasture River in Goshen. The bridge is being dismantled and getting prepared to be shipped to North Carolina to be refurbished and galvanized.
The load capacity of the bridge used to be just 6 tons, but will be rated for 20 tons after the renovations are complete. The bridge was built in 18-91, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Some West Virginians who lost their homes in last week's flood will be provided temporary homes.

Officials say FEMA will eventually provide travel trailers and then mobile homes to eligible flood victims. FEMA estimates more than one thousand homes were destroyed in the floods, another 16-hundred had major damage and 11-hundred had minor damage. Officials expect those numbers to rise as people finish collecting and cleaning their belongings and start registering for government help. As of today 24 roads in West Virginia are still out.

The accident happened around three- thirty when the driver of a motorcycle crashed his bike near Sweet Annie Hollow in Roanoke County. Authorities say the man suffered serious injuries in the wreck. That unfinished business goes back to 1917 when Walter Starrett worked as a railroad cop in Indiana.
On Christmas Eve, he attempted to throw out two drunks.
One pulled a knife and Starrett shot him to death.

But before he could have his day in court, Starrett was shot to death while chasing a suspect on the job.
But his name was never put on a national monument dedicated to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

Dan Starrett has since written a book about all this titled the father, the son, and the railroad ghost.

Rookie Kevin Harvick won the Inaugural Tropicana 400 in Chicago for his second career victory.

Ricky Rudd would take the early lead of the race and Kevin Harvick was on his rear bumper they were averaging over 190 miles per hour.
Then on lap 23, Mike Skinner blows a tire and hits the wall hard in turn three bringing out the caution. Skinner was O-K but taken to the hospital with a leg injury.
NASCAR called a mandatory pit stop on lap 43 when the race restarted Jimmy Spencer would take the lead with 212 laps to go.
Points leader Jeff Gordon was making his move he took over the 4th spot with 144 laps to go.
But Harvick would take the lead for good on lap 242, he led 113 laps taking the checkered flag ahead of Robert Pressley.

Virginia Amateur Sports is billing the Commonwealth Games as something for everyone, no matter what your competitive tastes are.

Many events got underway this weekend even though the opening ceremonies are Friday the 20th.
Athletes are competing in 46 different sports this year.
Their ages range from as young as five to 91 years old.
Virginia Amateur Sports lost its state funding in the budget battle of the recent General Assembly.
That hasn't impacted the games this year. The organization will request funds again next year, but the future is uncertain.

New York City was host today to the annual Waiter's Race. As part of Bastille Day celebrations, New York City waiters raced down 60th street with trays of French champagne and two flutes. In the other hand they carried French and American flags. Dozens of waiters, outfitted in long white aprons, took part in the race. (------------) This marks the fourth year for the race.
