((
The poor rating for the 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and
Country comes as a result of crash tests performed by the Insurance
Institute for Highway Safety.
The two Daimler Chrysler minivans are built basically the same but it
was the Dodge Grand caravan that failed the test.
The Insurance Institute says two tests revealed a part that connects the
fuel pump to the gas tank leaked.
BRIAN ONEILL/INSURANCE INSTITUTE PRESIDENT:
THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE FLANGE OF THE TANK WHERE THE FUEL PUMP GOES
INTO THE GAS TANK, THAT CRACK ALLOWED THE LIQUID THAT WAS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM TO LEAK OUT OF THE VECHILE.
DREW LEVINSON:
DAIMLER- CHRYSLER WOULD NOT COMMENT ON CAMERA-BUT FROM ITS DETROIT HEADQUARTERS A REPRESENTATIVE SAID IN ABOUT 50 OF ITS OWN TESTS IT COULD
NOT REPLICATE THE LEAK.
AND CHRYSLER SAID IT WOULD BE VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR SUCH A PROBLEM TO OCCUR IN A REAL ACCIDENT.
Still it has redesigned its fuels systems in its 2002 models as well as those built after July 6th.
The insurance institute-gave the revamped vehicles an acceptable rating.
These recent findings come after a government investigation found a
1999 Grand Caravan leaked fuel in a different area.
Daimler-Chrysler took no action and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has not heard of any such fuel leaks in actual
wrecks. Chrysler has no plans to recall its minivans.
