((WORKERS PULLED THE FIRST SMOLDERING BOXCARS FROM A BALTIMORE TUNNEL THURSDAY, AS A FREIGHT TRAIN CARRYING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS CONTINUED TO BURN DEEP INSIDE. BUT BEFORE CREWS COULD REMOVE THE REST OF THE 60-CAR TRAIN ... THEY HAD TO OVERCOME A MAJOR OBSTACLE. ONE OF THE TRAIN'S DERAILED TANKERS IS LEAKING HYDROCHLORIC ACID -- A DANGEROUS CHEMICAL THAT CAN IRRITATE THE EYES AND DAMAGE THE LUNGS. HECTOR TORRES/SPOKESMAN, FIRE DEPARTMENT: "We believe it's a small leak, but unfortunately it's going to complicate our operations. We think that we may have to offload that product from the leaking tank car into a good tank car .. before we can pull all of those tank cars out of there." FIREFIGHTERS -- UNABLE TO GET TO THE FLAMES IN THE MILE-LONG TUNNEL BECAUSE OF THE INTENSE HEAT -- STARTED SPRAYING WATER ON THE TANK CARS TO COOL THEM DOWN. "Anytime you've got a fire building up in a confined space, you're building up tremedous amounts of heat. And firefighters have got to travel through this in order to accomplish extinguishment." FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS ARE ALSO ON THE SCENE ... TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED. MEANWHILE, THE BILLOWING SMOKE IS HURTING BOTH WORK AND PLAY IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA. DRIVERS ARE GETTING CAUGHT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC JAMS ... AS CERTAIN STREETS REMAIN CLOSED. AND AT NEARBY CAMDEN YARDS, THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES POSTPONED THE SECOND PART OF THEIR DOUBLE-HEADER WITH THE TEXAS RANGERS ... FOR A SECOND DAY. SO FAR AIR TESTS AT BOTH ENDS OF THE TUNNEL HAVE NOT SHOWN ANY TOXIC EMMISSIONS THAT WOULD POSE A SERIOUS HEALTH HAZARD TO THE PUBLIC. JENNIFER JONES, CBS NEWS, BALTIMORE.))

JUDY SOLEMAN IS FINALLY GARDENING AGAIN....TWO YEARS AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED WITH LUNG CANCER AND HAVING SURGURY TO REMOVE ONE OF HER LUNGS.

(SOT SOLEMAN: I didn't think I was ever going to wake up.. You

know..I was just as surprised as everyone else. )

HER STORY IS TYPICAL.
SHE BEGAN SMOKING AS A TEEN.

(SOT SOLEMAN: Started hanging around a bunch of girls and you

know...it was the thing to do. It was cool and the thing to do. I met my husband, he continued to smoke and I smoked for 36 years.)

TODAY, ABOUT 30-PERCENT OF HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR GIRLS SMOKE.
THEY'RE SMOKING FOR WEIGHT CONTROL AND BECAUSE OF THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY'S AGGRESSIVE ADVERTISING.
(COOPER STANDUP: The recent rise in smoking rates, especially among young women is very dissapointing to organizations like the American Lung association who spearhead anti-smoking campaigns)

(SOT THOLKES: To realize they're being duped...they are a target that

the tobacco industry is really working to keep them hooked on a product that will ultimately kill them when used as intended.)

EARLY DETECTION IS THE KEY.
AN ANNUAL LUNG SCREENING IS RECOMMENDED FOR SMOKERS OVER 40.
SURVIVAL RATES FOR LUNG CANCER ARE LOW.
THE DISEASE IS FATAL FOR 86-PERCENT OF IT'S VICTIMS WITHIN FIVE YEARS OF A DIAGNOSIS.

(SOT THOLKES: There's a much higher survival rate for breast cancer

than there is with lung cancer and so there's a wonderful base of survivors that can speak about the disease. Unfortunately for lung cancer, they don't have that survival rate.)

JUDY ATTRIBUTES HER TWO YEAR SURVIVAL TO GOOD MEDICAL CARE, A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND MOSTLY, HER SUPPORTIVE DAUGHTER.

(SOT SOLEMAN: She was there through every single step. If there's

anybody that did anything. She was the angel sitting there on my shoulder.)))
