State Police say a Southbound car with two adults and two children veered left and crossed the median into Northbound lanes hitting another car.
In that vehicle was 60-year-old Renata Richter.
The Ohio resident was med-flighted to Roanoke with critical injuries and later died.
Authorities say the car that jumped the median caught fire, burning its occupants beyond recognition.

Henry County Sheriff's Deputies are searching for a Nelson County man believed to be at the bottom of the lake.
Divers continue to concentrate their efforts near Union Bridge.
That's where they located the body of a missing Martinsville woman four weeks ago.
Investigators still have no suspects in that case but have questioned a known acquaintance of Ether Adean Smith.
Divers plan to head back into the water today.

A 15-year-old accused of capital murder goes to trial today - but his attorneys still say the trial is too late to be legal.

Alexander Hudson was 14 when he and two friends were charged with robbing a Rocky Mount man and strangling him in his bed.
His attorneys tried to get the case dismissed, saying he was held in jail 8 hours too long to get a speedy trial.
Judge William Alexander ruled the trial will go on ... because defense attorneys agreed to the trial date.
Hudson's attorneys say THAT'll be the basis for their appeal.

Federal and state officials will open a Disaster Recovery Center in Tazewell today.
Specialists will have information for people who's homes and businesses were damaged by flash flooding.
Eight inches of rain fell in four hours across parts of the county on July eighth-- triggering flooding that damaged 700 homes and 50 businesses.

The center had not yet opened and no one was inside.
The owner of the center says it will be at least three months before the building can be renovated.

Officials are looking into the death of a Bedford County jail inmate.
38- year- old Ronald Overstreet Junior was serving a 15- day sentence for possession of marijuana in the Bedford Adult Detention Center.
He was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday and was later taken to Lynchburg General Hospital where he died.
Blue Ridge Regional Jail authorities say there was no evidence of foul play but an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
