If you've ever wondered what's in a name, just ask emergency crews in Danville.
They'll tell you it could one day mean the difference between life and death.
That's why the city wants to change some street names and numbers.
[Double Boxes=Keith & Justin/Danville Bureau]

Justin McLeod is in Downtown Danville tonight. Justin, what's the problem?
[Live=Justin Full/Danville Bureau]
[SUPER=@justin1;]
[SUPER=05-Danville;]

Keith, Danville has a Chatham Court, Chatham Drive, and a Chatham Avenue.
As you might imagine, that can sometimes lead to a lot of confusion for emergency crews.
But as we found out, the solution can also cause some confusion of its own.

((DOUG YOUNG/EMERGENCY SERVICES DEPT: PUBLIC SAFETY IS THE MAIN DRIVE IN THIS PROJECT. GETTING THERE QUICKER, BEING MORE EFFICIENT IN THE CARE FOR THE PEOPLE THATS CALLING FOR HELP.)) [Runs10]
[OUT Q=thats calling for help]

The main problem is similar street names
For example, Danville has a Melrose Drive and a Melrose Ave.
Some streets are one with two different names. (Seminole and Forestdale)
Then there are the house numbers that are out of sequence.
On this road, house numbers go from 900's to 800's, back to the 900's.

So about a year ago, the city began the process of changing street names. They contacted residents and held public hearings. But City officials quickly learned not everyone would give a name change the green light.

[IN Q=The city's plan involves]

((JUSTIN McLEOD/REPORTING: THE CITY'S PLAN INVOLVES MORE THAN CHANGING A STREET SIGN. IT ALSO CAN BE A MAJOR INCONVENIENCE FOR THE RESIDENTS. MAIL ADDRESSES HAVE TO BE CHANGED, NEW CHECKS HAVE TO BE PRINTED, AND IN SOME CASES NEW HOUSE NUMBERS HAVE TO BE PUT UP.)) [Runs14]
[OUT Q=to be put up]

The city understands the confusion and opposition.
To help ease it, the city allows residents to give input on what the new street name should be.
And the postal service will continue to deliver the mail to both addresses.

[IN Q=We had to change all our business]

Virginia Tech Wood Science professor Fred Lamb says he isn't picky about furniture, even if it's wood.
Lamb is like most Americans who pick much of their furniture out of a catalog.
Lamb says generic products like bedroom suites and kitchen tables can be made for roughly half the cost overseas... mainly because labor and wood there are so much cheaper.
But products like upholstered sofas are the kind of thing you custom order depending on what color you want or type of fabric.
So if you custom order from Southeast Asia you'll have to wait about three months, but if you custom order from a manufacturer in the US, you get the couch in about a week.

Lamb says that may be the question Lane Furniture for to ask. It's about to uproot from Altavista and Rocky Mount.
Much like Pittsburgh, Lane never reassessed its manufacturing lines or upgraded their facilities.
Compare that to Detroit, or in this case, Rowe, and you find both were more willing to invest and were prepared to compete with foreign competition.
