A state helicopter took the governor over Scott and Wise Counties. He also landed for a closer look.
The floods washed away three bridges and damaged nine others in far southwest Virginia.
Several houses and mobile homes were swept away.

Authorities in Bedford have identified the man who drowned there over the weekend.
They say the victim was 63- year- old Benjamin Harrison Porter of Bedford.

A group of children discovered the body on Sunday afternoon while playing in a creek near the Westgate Shopping Center.
Police say Porter was last heard from on Saturday morning. They have placed him at the pay phone in front of the Bedford Winn Dixie shortly before nine AM.

The 30-year old former Roanoke patrolman admitted accepting bribes and was convicted of extortion and robbery. Friday he was locked up to begin serving an eight-year sentence.
"Because of the unusual circumstances of his having been a police officer," Judge James Turk said today that he would give him until September 10th to report to prison on his own.
Pledge said he needed the time to explain to his five-year old daughter what happened and to spend time with his new wife of two months.

A Greensboro man- -on trial for kidnapping his wife last year in Salem- -wept through much of his estranged wife's testimony today in federal court.
It reached the point where his own attorney moved for a mistrial, again questioning his client's competency to stand trial.

Glenn Dexter Powell had slept behind the garage of his in-laws home- -waiting for his mother in law to leave for work, according to the prosecutor.
Around 7:30 the morning of November 16 last year, Powell allegedly entered the house armed with a 9-millimeter pistol. He threatened to kill Kimberly Powell, then took her and the three children at gunpoint.

The President has nominated John Brownlee as the new U-S Attorney for the Western District of Virginia.
Brownlee worked as a federal prosecutor in the District of Columbia, before returning to Roanoke to await the nomination with his wife Leann Necessary.
Brownlee says he's "very honored and grateful" to President Bush and looks forward to the confirmation process in the Senate.

Joe Altadonna, the owner of Westlake Safari Mini Golf, has perched the fiberglass rooster atop a vintage pink Cadillac.
Last month, another rooster on the side of the road near his business got Altadonna into trouble.
The county planning commission said it violated a sign ordinance -- that it was too close to the road and other signs.
As Altadonna appeals that decision, he decided to have some fun.

Roanoke Cement plans to replace its 1951 packhouse with a bigger, more modern facility. The more than 37-thousand square foot building will double the current amount of storage space and allow the company to quickly switch between packaging a variety of products. Officials say new equipment will also improve the work environment by cutting down on the amount of dust produced in the packaging process. Roanoke Cement was formed in the early 1990's. Its products are distributed in six east coast states.
