The Presidents of both banks, Ken Thompson of First Union, and Bud Baker of Wachovia believe the hardest work is now ahead of them... divesting branches, meshing strategies and combining teams of experts that have brought both banks this far.

SunTrust's CEO did make a speech at the meeting, a sort of last ditch effort to win over shareholders.
And even though he lost this round of mergia mania, industry analysts expect SunTrust to make a bid for BB&T in the near future.
As for customers, well they can bank on some big changes in the coming months.

An incident of gay bashing in Roanoke has prompted more calls for stronger hate crime laws.
Two members of the Metropolitan Community Church were attacked as they left a bible study around 8:30 Wednesday evening.
Today, the N-A-A-C-P and local gay activists held a rally at Lee Plaza.
They're asking Congress to pass legislation that includes crimes involving sexual orientation.

The current hate crime statue does not include language concerning sexual orientation.
The two people hurt in the attack got away with just a few cuts and bruises.
It took them five hours, but Bedford County authorities finally got their man.
Around 12:30 this afternoon, a 17- year- old male wanted on several felony charges was turning himself in at the sheriff's department.
That's when he decided to take off, assaulting a female deputy in the process.

The sheriff's tactical team, state troopers and a state police helicopter spent more than five hours searching for the teen in heavy woods near Route 714.
He was finally captured near the Whispering Pines mobile home park around 5:45.
Sheriff Brown says the teen likely will face additional charges of escape, assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.
An accident in Amherst County has U.S. 29 shut down in both directions at Route 130.
The State Police says a tractor trailer overturned just before ten tonight, taking with it a utility pole.
Two other vehicles also crashed.
Troopers say there are injuries but are described as non-life threatening.
You are asked to avoid that area.
The road is expected to be closed for several hours.
Tropical Storm Barry is slowly drifting towards Louisiana after leaving a wet and windy calling card in Florida.

A violent storm is being blamed for the crash of a Virginia National Guard cargo plane in March.
21 people were killed when the C-23 Sherpa went down in a field near Macon, Georgia. Eighteen Virginia National Guard members, including Blacksburg native Greg Skurupey were killed in the crash.
A report by the Florida National Guard says a thunderstorm caused the plane to experience nine times the force of earth's gravity.
A source close to the investigation says the crew apparently incorrectly loaded passengers and gear so that the plane carried too much weight at the back.
A Roanoke murder suspect is back in Roanoke after being arrested in Atlanta last month.
Roanoke Police say 19- year- old Bernard Maurice Walker was transported to the Roanoke City Jail this afternoon. He is being held without bond.

Walker is charged with shooting 18-year- old Reaco Hilton on Christmas Eve outside of a Melrose Avenue convenience store.
The J-P-S apparel plant in South Boston closed its doors today.
The company decided in June to consolidate manufacturing operations and discontinue making certain fabrics.
Nearly 350-people lost their jobs.
Today, employees gathered one last time for a goodbye luncheon.
Town and county officials continue to work together to market the site in hopes of attracting new businesses and jobs to the area.

"Pearl Harbor'' star Ben Affleck is being treated for alcohol abuse.
The actor voluntarily entered the Promises rehabilitation facility in Malibu on Tuesday.
A statement by his publicist says "Ben is a self-aware and smart man who has decided that a fuller life
awaits him without alcohol.
He has chosen to seek out professional assistance and is committed to traveling a healthier road with the support of his family, friends and fans."
Affleck, who's starred in such movies as "Good Will Hunting" and "Armageddon" will turn 29-years old this month.
It is peach season once again.
And there were plenty of them in downtown Roanoke. The Virginia Mountain Peach Festival got underway today. They were serving up big batches of peaches and cream all day.

A Montgomery County man will pay a 1-thousand dollar fine for his part in a fatal car accident last August.
A judge found Richard Horne guilty of a form of reckless driving because he was speeding on Pilot Road.
But the judge did rule the wreck was accidental.
Family and friends of the victim, 47-year-old Kenneth Sowers (Sauers), felt the sentence was too light.
Sowers was headed to work when he was hit.
The family has been looking for the woman driving behind him with the help of this panel truck.
It pleads for her eyewitness account which they believe would be helpful in the case against Horne.

The generic medication of the anti-depressant Prozac is now on its way to pharmacy shelves thanks to a plant in Bedford County.
Barr Laboratories manufactures fluoxetine (flu-OX-eh-teen) in New Jersey, but the company has been
bottling and packaging the capsules at its facility in Forest.
Barr won the right to launch the generic after challenging Prozac patents in federal court. The company began shipping the drug today. It should be available to consumers within a few days.
Just three months after they were filed, three and a half percent of Virginia state income tax forms have not been processed.
That's because the first change in three decades to the Form 760 caused taxpayer and computer filer errors to increase 48 percent over last year.
Eight percent of the refund checks took more than 30 days to be processed.
Taxpayers whose forms had errors may still be waiting.

Michael Vick made his NFL pre-season debut last night

A renovation project uncovers millions of dollars of lost art in San Diego.

Nearly a dozen of Gerald Cassidy's historic paintings were revealed when workers tore down walls to create a new exhibit at the Museum of Man.
Researches across the country had long considered these paintings "lost"... they hadn't been seen for eighty six years, when they were thought to have disappeared.
The newfound treasures will be on display to the public tomorrow and Sunday.
