State police say Cecil Philpott of Chesapeake lifted off from a private airstrip just south of Rocky Mount .. and made three loops around the field before the plane hit some trees and came down.

An international restructuring plan is taking its toll on a Salem company.

Officials with Acterna said today 61 people would be let go. Earnings were reportedly much lower than expected, so the company says consolidation was necessary.
Acturna has facilities all over the world. The Salem facility makes soft and hardware for communications testing equipment.
Production there will cease, but engineering and marketing will remain.
Much of the production will be out-sourced, possibly improving work opportunities for furloughed employees.

An expressway in Chicago was closed most of the day as firefighters tried to keep a chemical spill from igniting in the heat.

A semi-truck carrying flammable liquid rolled over on the Dan Ryan Expressway during the early rush hour today. Officials closed traffic in both directions when the truck started leaking. A Chicago Transit Authority train line that runs along the expressway as also closed. Passengers were taken to shuttle buses to get around the wreck. Firefighters poured water on the wreckage to dilute any hazardous chemicals, which they feared could self ignite.

It's called a PET scanner --and it's capable of detecting up to 90 percent of most types of the disease.

Doctors say it is even more accurate than C-T scans.

Doctor Matthews shows us examples of tumors that the CT scan missed but the PET scan picked-up.
Take a look at this first PET scan --aside from the heart and kidneys the other black dots are cancer -- the CT scan showed nothing. And this case is even more dramatic. The CT scan showed no cancer --but the PET scan shows the patient is covered with tumors.
The PET scan works by measuring the metabolic activity of cells--it looks at how much energy a particular tissue is using.

And one day it could even be used for the detection of alzheimer's disease.

A hearing was held this morning in Salem circut court. A protest committee made up of 3 A-S-A officials and representatives from the city of salem ruled against Bailey pitching for the Salem based Extreme Force.
