The Henry County Sheriff's Department has made a pair of arrests following a gunfight that killed a teenager, and wounded two others.

22-year old James Scales and 21- year old Terris Dandridge, both of Martinsville, are charged with shooting and wounding Joseph Taylor. Dandridge was also injured in the shooting.

The incident took place outside the Horsepasture Ruritan Club on Route 58 just after eleven Friday night. Deputies say a fight erupted with as many as 30 shots being fired. 16 year old Lorenzo Hairston died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Another Martinsville man wounded in the shooting is recovering.

State Police say slick roads may have contributed to a Salem police officer's wreck on Route 4-19 today.

The wreck happened shortly before 5 this evening near the Lakeside Plaza. State police say Officer Brian Jenkins was responding to a call when his cruiser hydroplaned, hitting a light pole on the drivers side. Jenkins has been released from the hospital with a slight concussion and injuries to his leg and arm.

Authorities have called off the search for a man thought to have drowned in Giles County. This evening-- crews searched Shumate Falls in Glen Lyn. Officials say the search will resume in the morning.

Stone Gregory is the man who wants to build the drag strip. He believes the project would bring much needed revenue and jobs to Pittsylvania County. The Board of Zoning Appeals agreed, aprroving the strip by a 4 to 1 vote.

Just three days after the last blast, another suicide bombing. But despite the twisted metal, and rushing emergency crews, this is not the mayhem of last Thursday's attack in Jerusalem.
This time, the bomber walked into this outdoor cafe, in a northern suburb of Haifa. He blew himself up on the patio - had he walked indoors, Israeli police say, it could have been much worse. Most of the victims of this blast were only lightly injured.
Militant group Islamic Jihad announced that their activist, twenty-eight-year-old Muhammad Nasri carried out the attack.

The Jerusalem explosion was claimed by Hamas. Both have promised more to come.
Israel has blamed Palestinian chief Yasser Arafat, for failing to arrest militants in his territory.

But the Palestinians are in no mood to do Israel's bidding - protesters scuffled again with Israeli police, who took over the Palestinian political center, Orient House after the last bombing. Doctors say the eight year old remains in critical condition and in a light coma, but could be cared for at home. A Virginia woman died yesterday after being struck by lightning. Officials say 39- year old Lonnie West was hit while pulling up an anchor on a boat in Norfolk. Witnesses say other boaters tried to revive West before emergency crews arrived, but she did NOT have a pulse. Officials from the National Weather Service say it was NOT raining at the time of the accident but there was occasional lightning and winds up to 33 miles per hour.

Largely independent of the state budget debacle, the Poe Museum has launched a new effort to raise private funds and expand its educational mission at a time other Virginia museums are being forced to cut back.
The tiny building is the oldest structure still standing in the original city.
It was never home to Poe -- but he walked in the garden, and lived and worked nearby.
An eighth grade teacher from California happened onto the museum, and found it the most compelling tourist attraction in the city.

The Virginia football team must replace 11 starters for the upcoming season. One of the areas the wahoos have struggled in the last few years has been on the defense. Steve Mason says Al Groh hopes to change all that.

((Al Groh was a two sport star at Virginia. He played on both the football and lacrosse teams. In each sport he played defense. Those instincts and the fact he has spent 13 seasons in the NFL will come in handy as he tries to shape a cavalier defense that must replace five starters from last years unit.

Kenny Perry won the Buick Open with a 25 under par 263. It's his first P-G-A tour victory in 6 years.

It's a baby boom in China, only the expectant mothers are giant pandas.

Seventeen pandas will be giving birth this autumn, according to experts at breeding bases there.
The director of the Giant Panda Breeding Technology Committee of China says up to half of the new births could be twins.
The babies have all been conceived by artificial fertilization.
The breeding base has prepared for the new mothers by building an air-conditioned delivery room. (------------) The giant panda is an endangered species with only one thousand pandas left in the wild.
