The Henry County Sheriff's Department has made a pair of arrests following a gunfight that killed a teenager, and wounded two others.
22-year old James Scales and 21- year old Terris Dandridge, both of Martinsville, are charged with shooting and wounding Joseph Taylor.
Dandridge was also injured in the shooting.
The incident took place outside the Horsepasture Ruritan Club on Route 58 just after eleven Friday night.
Deputies say a fight erupted with as many as 30 shots being fired.
16 year old Lorenzo Hairston died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Another Martinsville man wounded in the shooting is recovering.
State Police say slick roads may have contributed to a Salem police officer's wreck on Route 4-19 today.
The wreck happened shortly before 5 this evening near the Lakeside Plaza.
State police say Officer Brian Jenkins was responding to a call when his cruiser hydroplaned, hitting a light pole on the drivers side.
Jenkins has been released from the hospital with a slight concussion and injuries to his leg and arm.
Authorities have called off the search for a man thought to have drowned in Giles County.
This evening-- crews searched Shumate Falls in Glen Lyn.
Officials say the search will resume in the morning.
A neighborhood dispute is revving up in Southside, as a Pittsylvania County man is planning to build a drag strip near Java.
Many area residents oppose the project, and are taking the issue to court.

A drag strip much like the one you see here could arrive in Pittsylvania County in less than a year.
Its would be located in an area that's generally pretty quiet.

Many residents believe the 1/4 mile strip would generate too much noise, pollution, and traffic.

Stone Gregory is the man who wants to build the drag strip.
He believes the project would bring much needed revenue and jobs to Pittsylvania County.
The Board of Zoning Appeals agreed, aprroving the strip by a 4 to 1 vote.

Ten residents are suing hoping a judge will overturn the board's decision.
They argue the county failed to consider the general welfare of residents.

A hearing is set for a week from Tuesday.
Gregory hopes to win and have the drag strip open by sometime next Spring.

It's probably no suprise some local musicians took top honors at this year's Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax.
Thousands of fans of bluegrass and old-time music crowded into Felts Park this week for the 66th annual convention.
More than 2000 contestants competed in more than a dozen different categories for cash prizes and bragging rights.
Bluegrass Tradition won the bluegrass band competition, while Southern Pride took the Old Time Band competition.
Honors for Best All-Around Performer went to fiddler Eddie Bond of Austinville.[Armenian-Asylum]
A gay Armenian refugee who was beaten outside a church in Roanoke earlier this month will get to stay in the U-S.
After applying for asylum months ago, 28-year-old Armen (grih-GOR-ee-an) Grigoryan has been recommended for asylum in the United States.
Earlier this month, Grigoryan and another man were attacked outside the predominantly gay Metropolitan Community Church of the Blue Ridge in Roanoke.
Grigoryan says he just has to pass an F-B-I background check to complete his asylum request.

The Virginia Lottery is hoping to continue its partnership with NASCAR driver Hermie Sadler.
The Virginia Lottery pays Sadler up to 600- thousan dollars to plaster its logo on his cars and his racing uniforms.
It's a deal the Lottery hopes to continue.
The Virginia Lottery wants to renew the deal next year.
But University of Virginia political analyst Larry Sabato says a lot of people might question whether the sponsorship is worth the money.

A suicide bomber blew himself up today on the patio of a restaurant in a northern Israeli town.
The only person he killed was himself but at least 20- others were wounded.

Just three days after the last blast, another suicide bombing.
But despite the twisted metal, and rushing emergency crews, this is not
the mayhem of last Thursday's attack in Jerusalem.
This time, the bomber walked into this outdoor cafe, in a northern
suburb of Haifa. He blew himself up on the patio - had he walked
indoors, Israeli police say, it could have been much worse. Most of the
victims of this blast were only lightly injured.
Militant group Islamic Jihad announced that their activist,
twenty-eight-year-old Muhammad Nasri carried out the attack.
The Jerusalem explosion was claimed by Hamas. Both have promised more to
Israel has blamed Palestinian chief Yasser Arafat, for failing to arrest
militants in his territory.

But the Palestinians are in no mood to do Israel's bidding - protesters
scuffled again with Israeli police, who took over the Palestinian
political center, Orient House after the last bombing. They also took
over other Palestinian Authority offices near Jerusalem, including a
major telecommunications office.

Palestinians have called for, a day of rage Monday, and they've promised
to bring the uprising from the West Bank and Gazato the very streets of
the Israeli capital.

An eight- year old boy who survived a shark attack is back home.

Jessie Arbogast left a Florida hospital today and is now resting in his own bed at home in Mississippi.
Doctors say the eight year old remains in critical condition and in a light coma, but could be cared for at home.
The little boy's neurologist also says it appears the child has suffered some brain damage due to massive blood loss.

A Virginia woman died yesterday after being struck by lightning.
Officials say 39- year old Lonnie West was hit while pulling up an anchor on a boat in Norfolk.
Witnesses say other boaters tried to revive West before emergency
crews arrived, but she did NOT have a pulse.
Officials from the National Weather Service say it was NOT
raining at the time of the accident but there was occasional lightning and winds up to 33 miles per hour.

Largely independent of the state budget debacle, the Poe Museum has launched a new effort to raise private funds and expand its educational mission at a time other Virginia museums are being forced to cut back.
The tiny building is the oldest structure still standing in the original city.
It was never home to Poe -- but he walked in the garden, and lived and worked nearby.
An eighth grade teacher from California happened onto the museum, and found it the most compelling tourist attraction in the city.

After the first pit stop, Robby Gordon came out and was running second with Jeff Gordon running a close third.
Joe Nemechek slides off the road course in turn one and runs through the gravel and gets his car back on the track.
Ron Fellows was leading the race after 33 laps but he broke an axle.
Jeff Burton took the lead and he and Dale Earnhardt Junior would battle but Burton kept his car in the front spot.
Jarrett worked his way back to 13-th but he and Mark Martin hook up in turn one leaving Jarrett in the sand and the 35-th position.
After a couple of cautions inlcuding one on the final lap Gordon takes the checkered flag for his second win in a row and his seventh road course victory.

The Virginia football team must replace 11 starters for the upcoming season. One of the areas the wahoos have struggled in the last few years has been on the defense. Steve Mason says Al Groh hopes to change all that.

((Al Groh was a two sport star at Virginia. He played on both the football and lacrosse teams. In each sport he played defense. Those instincts and the fact he has spent 13 seasons in the NFL will come in handy as he tries to shape a cavalier defense that must replace five starters from last years unit.
Some good news for the defense, the front four returns all of the starters and this group might just be the spark for the entire defense.

Kenny Perry won the Buick Open with a 25 under par 263. It's his first P-G-A tour victory in 6 years.

Billy Mayfair stepped into the P-G-A tour record book in today's final round.
Mayfair closed with an 11 under par 61 that included a 9 under par 27 on the back nine. The 9 under par for 9 holes is a record.

It's a baby boom in China, only the expectant mothers are giant pandas.
Seventeen pandas will be giving birth this autumn, according to experts at breeding bases there.
The director of the Giant Panda Breeding Technology Committee of China says up to half of the new births could be twins.
The babies have all been conceived by artificial fertilization.
The breeding base has prepared for the new mothers by building an air-conditioned delivery room.
The giant panda is an endangered species with only one thousand pandas left in the wild.
