The model aircraft took off from an Oregon airport yesterday. It was flown by remote control by reasearchers on the ground.
Named "Orville" after one of the Wright brothers, the NASA glider was towed up to an altitude of 101-thousand feet by a helium-filled balloon. The plane was then released and returned to the ground for landing.
The Mars airplane features a long straight wing and twin tails in the rear.
If the aircraft is developed for a mission to Mars, researchers say it would carry a variety of sophisticated instruments to conduct experiments on the Red Planet.
