((The Canadian Air Transat jetliner sits on a runway in the Azores Islands... with blown tires and deployed evacuation slides... as the only evidence that anything at all had gone wrong. But, earlier today this plane and 306 people on board came perilously close to disaster. The Airbus A-330 took off from Toronto on an overnight trip to Lisbon, Portugal. And everything was normal as flight 236 cruised six miles above the North Atlantic. But, two-thirds of the way into the trip...trouble. Pilots reported an oil leak had forced them to shut down the RIGHT engine...and they began planning an emergency landing in the Azores. Then...almost unbelievably...an even more threatening problem surfaced.
Sources say pilots warned controllers the jet was suffering ..."a heavy fuel loss"...and may have..."to put down in the sea..." At 30-thousand feet and still 20 minutes from land...investigators say... the lone remaining engine, the LEFT, ran out of fuel.
The jetliner...now a GLIDER...headed for a desperation landing. Passengers including Joe Fernandez...donned life jackets as flight attendants tried not to panic. voice of: Joe Fernandez, Passenger "We asked if we were going to hit the water and she was telling us they didn't know if we were going to make it or not....if we were going to be able to make it to the landing strip, but probably not, that we were going to hit the water."

Somehow the pilots managed to glide the jet to safety... coming down hard on the runway. Fernandez: "There was like a big crash, a big landing, we saw sparks everywhere, I guess it was the wheels burst, and it was the rims going along the runway. And then we stopped." ORR: Crash experts are at a loss to explain how a TWIN engine jet could lose BOTH in a matter of minutes. And the incident may reignite the debate over the safety of flying over the ocean with only two engines. For its part, the airline will only say...it was obviously some kind of mechanical problem...and quote..."we would never leave without enough fuel." ))
