Post 16 officials say a large flock of Canada geese has made the lake and surrounding park their home.
Geese droppings have made the area largely unusable, and the Lynchburg health department has received phone calls from citizens concerned about the situation.
The American Legion voluntarily closed the lake for the rest of the summer, and will drain it later this year.
Health officials say the droppings could cause high levels of fecal coliform bacteria in the water which could then lead to health problems in those exposed to it.
No health problems related to the lake have been reported.

The site's partly funded by A-E-P because the company uses the information to determine how much electricity can be generated by the dam at Smith Mountain Lake. Improvements included the addition of satellite equipment that make the gage's information available over the internet.
