Gateway is laying off a quarter of its global workforce... about 5-thousand employees.
750 of those layoffs will come from Hampton, when Gateway closes its customer service center there.
But a spokesman says the company will keep almost one-thousand manufacturing jobs in Tidewater.

A Grayson County grand jury says there's enough evidence for a local woman to be tried for capital murder.

58-year-old Betty Jean Angeline (An-juh-LINE) was indicted for capital and first degree murder for the shooting deaths of two Independence women. 59-year-old Linda McKnight and 62-year-old Glenda Jenkins were killed earlier this year. Police will not comment on the motive but say the three were friends. Angeline waived her right to a preliminary hearing last week and remains in the New River Valley jail awaiting a trial date. If convicted of capital murder she could face the death penalty.

The search continues for an Amherst County teen who escaped from jail yesterday afternoon.

Authorities say 19- year- old Jason Scott Owen slipped out of the jail's recreation yard through a door that had a broken lock.
Witnesses later spotted him in the Madison Heights area of the county, but he hasn't been seen since. [PRE-PRO mug w/car info]
Owen is believed to be traveling with a 17-year- old girl, driving a faded red, 1989 Ford Festiva with Virginia tags Y-E-Y-9-4-7-9.

Law enforcement's annual harvest of illegal marijuana has yielded several bumper crops in Amherst County.

Air and ground crews spent most of the day searching spots where confidential tips indicated there might be marijuana growing.
By early afternoon, their efforts had turned up more than three dozen fully mature plants, each with a street value of about a thousand dollars.
No arrests were made, but authorities say their investigations continue.

The state police Drug Enforcement Division reports success in other parts of our area as well.
More than 17-hundred plants were discovered in Franklin, Montgomery, Botetourt, Pittsylvania, Floyd and Patrick Counties this summer.

The seizures will result in six arrests.
The marijuana "eradication effort" peaks in the summer months, when the plants reach maturity and can be seen from the air.

An Altavista driver was one of two truckers to survive a fiery accident on an interstate in Pennsylvania last night.

Dwayne McCormick of Altavista and Walter Whitfield of Rochester, New York, told a Pennsylvania newspaper that they had to stand by and watch a woman burn to death.

Virginians for Wilderness says the area would stretch from Pendleton County west Virginia to Highland and Augusta counties.
The proposal is still in the conceptual stage and is not yet being studied by the U-S Forest Service.

Womack will undergo surgery to repair the high ankle sprain suffered against Wisconsin. The surgery will take place as soon as possible after the swelling in the ankle decreases.

Cleveland Indians manager Charlie Manuel did not manage tonights game against Boston due to abdominal surgery.

He'd been admitted to the Cleveland Clinic on Monday night after vomiting and feeling ill. The Cleveland Indians say Manuel is resting comfortably following surgery today to remove scar tissue from his colon. Part of his colon had been removed during spring training last year. The 57-year-old manager has a history of serious health problems.

Researchers tested out the energy-absorbing Humpy Bumper. All indications were that the test was a success, but the data still must be analyzed.
The bumper is designed to address concerns about the rigidity of the front of stock cars and the lack of any sort of bumper to absorb the energy from a crash.
By the way, it's called the 'Humpy Bumper' in honor of 'Humpy' Wheeler, the president of Lowes Motor Speedway.

That's what visitors to Oklahoma are doing.
The maze is paying tribute to a road well traveled... it's in the shape of a route 66 logo..
It covers two and half miles through corn as high as nine feet.
This giant puzzle is one of many turning up in Oklahoma.
Farmers say the they hope the trend will help family farmers earn money and educate the public about agriculture.
