Law enforcement's annual harvest of illegal marijuana has yielded several bumper crops in Amherst County.

Air and ground crews spent most of the day searching spots where confidential tips indicated there might be marijuana growing.
By early afternoon, their efforts had turned up more than three dozen fully mature plants, each with a street value of about a thousand dollars.
No arrests were made, but authorities say their investigations continue.

The state police Drug Enforcement Division reports success in other parts of our area as well.
More than 17-hundred plants were discovered in Franklin, Montgomery, Botetourt, Pittsylvania, Floyd and Patrick Counties this summer.
Those plants are said to have a combined street value of one-point seven million dollars.
The seizures will result in six arrests.
The marijuana eradication effort peaks in the summer months, when the plants reach maturity and can be seen from the air.

A Grayson County grand jury says there's enough evidence for a local woman to be tried for capital murder.

58-year-old Betty Jean Angeline (An-juh-LINE) was indicted for capital and first degree murder for the shooting deaths of two Independence women.
59-year-old Linda McKnight and 62-year-old Glenda Jenkins were killed earlier this year.
Police will not comment on the motive but say the three were friends.
Angeline waived her right to a preliminary hearing last week and remains in the New River Valley jail awaiting a trial date.
If convicted of capital murder she could face the death penalty.

Cleveland Indians manager Charlie Manuel has undergone abdominal surgery.

Manuel's been hospitalized twice within the last week with abdominal problems. He'd been admitted to the Cleveland Clinic on Monday night after vomiting and feeling ill.
The Cleveland Indians say Manuel is resting comfortably following surgery today to remove
