New figures show the plane carrying singer Aaliyah was overweight when it crashed in the Bahamas.

John Frank of the Cessna Pilots association says "no question about it.. They were overloaded.
He says the weight caused the pilot to lose control.
New figures from the Bahamas Civil Aviation Department show the weight was about 55 hundred pounds at takeoff.. not including the weight of passengers and one lost bag.
The maximum authorized takeoff weight is 63 hundred pounds... a difference of 800 pounds.
All nine people on board the plane died.

The National Transportation Safety Board released its findings today on the Lexington plane crash that killed two men.
The report says inadaquate preflight planning contributed to the wreck.

A year ago today, the plane broke up in the air before plunging to the ground, killing both men on board. The flight was on its way from West Virginia to South Carolina. The N-T-S-B report says pilot Jack Gambino of New York was not instrument rated, tried to fly into inclement weather and became disoriented. The report says Gambino did not obtain a pre-flight weather briefing, and the plane's inspection had expired.

Today, a judge sentenced the 16-year-old to 64 hours of community service.

The fire chief says between 30 and 40 cars were involved, some of the cars contained hazardous materials.

No injuries have been reported.
Until it's determined exactly what ignited the fire, officials plan to let the blaze burn itself out.

The mold was removed and crews gave the entire building a wipe-down tonight.

Most people see nothing wrong with the American flag flying above a century-old statue.
But that's not the case for some folks in Luray.
The Virginia Heritage Coalition say an American flag flying over a Confederate statue in Luray violates a Virginia law banning Union markings on Confederate memorials and vice versa.
The group says the U-S flag is the quintessential Union marking ... and that the town must replace it with a Confederate flag to comply with state law.
Luray's mayor says the town has no intention of replacing the flag.

The VMI Keydets opened up their 2001 football season last night with a a 41-to-18 loss to Duquesne. Gene Coffman led VMI with 154 yards rushing and two touchdowns, but the Keydets gave up 27 points in the first half and never recovered.

A kicker for Jacksonville State booted an extra point last night against Cumberland College. No big deal except that the kicker was a woman. Ashley Martin became the first woman to play and score a point in a division one game last night. She also plays soccer - on the women's team.

The Winston Cup stars are in Darlington this weekend. But last night they were in nearby Myrtle Beach hanging out at a go cart track.

The event was held to determine the fan pairings for the next No Bull 5 million dollar race at Richmond next Month. Last night, Michael Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt Junior, Ward Burton, Bobby Labonte and Elliott Sadler strapped themselves inside these go-carts and literally went after each other. The race lasted only about 50 laps, but were at least that many spins. In fact it looked a lot like Martinsville or Bristol. Ward Burton eventually won the race while Little "E" ended up last but with the most direct hits.

A triple header of hoops in Daleville at the Cavalier invitational. In the opener Pulaski beat Eastern Montgomery. The host team played last.

Lord Botetourt's Christian Graham steps up from the top of the key and takes advantage of the packed in defense to knock in the three. Botetourt would keep rolling as Christian Graham gets the ball to Amber Graham who hits the jumper. Forest would keep it close with Kate Hubbard's pass to Colby Neighbors. She scores but Botetourt wins it 47-to-38.
[SUPER=04-Salem vs. Heritage;]

The middle game of the triple header had Salem taking on Heritage. The Pioneers were tough inside as Nadia Shelton misses the shot, but big time Tekita Butler cleans the glass and hits the tough fade away in the fourth. This one went to overtime, and that's where Salem won it from the line. The final Salem 59, Heritage 52.

The Roanoke Express has signed a former draft pick on the Washington Caps in left winger Dan Reja. He was the 171st overall pick in the 1994 draft. He is tested veteran who has played in 218 games as a pro. Last season he played in Germany.

The best returning player on the defending national championship Duke basketball team has broken his hand. Point guard Jason Williams fractured his non-shooting hand in a pick-up game on campus. He should be ready for practice on October 13th. He'll get a cast today.
