A water main break in Roanoke has left several homes without water and forced the closure of a busy road.

The water line broke in front of the Shenandoah Life building on Brambleton Avenue this afternoon. Water rushed down and partially flooded Fishburne park. Roanoke Police say their 9-1-1 switchboard was swamped with calls about water service. Crews are working on the water main break, but city officials say it may be later tonight or early morning before the break can be fixed.

The city needs to repair a faulty gate on Dan River Incorporated's Schoolfield Dam. In order to complete the repairs, the water level in the reservoir will be lowered to allow access for workers. As a result, Danville's water intake point will be inoperable all day Monday. City officials are asking residents to conserve water until levels can return to normal Tuesday morning.

A fire at Glacier National Park is getting bigger and growing deeper into the park. Officials say the blaze has already burned 43 thousand acres, and is out of control. So far, no homes have been burned, but three outbuildings have been destroyed. More than 900 firefighters are working to control the blaze. But they say heavy winds are hampering their efforts.

The medical community is mourning the loss of a heart transplant pioneer.

Doctor Christiaan (BAHR-nahrd) Barnard of South Africa performed the world's first heart transplant in 1967. He died today of an asthma attack while on vacation with his wife in Cyprus. Barnard's transplant back in the 60s transformed him into an international celebrity. His patient lived 18 days before rejecting the new heart. Barnard was 78 years old.

Donahue died today of heart failure at a Santa Monica hospital after suffering a heart attack on Thursday. Born Merle Johnson Junior in 1936, Donahue headed to Hollywood at 19 and began a successful career spanning the 50's and 60's. A six-year old boy is dead and his 16-year old brother is wounded after their mother allegedly went on a shooting rampage in Florida.

According to police, Leslie Wallace shot her six-year old son then drove to her 16-year old son's church and turned the gun on him as he stood in the church's book store. The bullet struck the Bible the boy had carried with him to church saving his life. Officers shot and wounded Wallace after police say she pointed the gun at them.

Blacksburg will be welcoming a new medical school come 2003.
A school of Osteopathic Medicine will be built in Virginia Tech's Corporate Research Center.
There's no official affiliation yet, but negotiations are in the works.

There's already an Osteopathy school just 90 minutes outside of Roanoke in Lewisburg, West Virginia.
The school generates $25 million in revenues for the small community each year.

Virginia Tech running back Lee Suggs is facing one of the toughest battles of his college career, recovering from knee surgery.
Suggs tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Saturday's win over Connecticut.

The injury occured on what appeared to be an innocent looking sweep around the left end.
Head Trainer Mike Goforth said today that the knee was swollen and that Lee was experiencing pain which means its a new injury requiring surgery.
Gorforth said the surgery to repair the A-C-L and the Meniscus will take place in 2 weeks after the swelling and pain subsides.
In a release from the Tech sports information office, Lee said quote "of course I'm dissapointed but I have to try and make the best of it. He said we'll just have to go in and fixit it and try to get it ready for next year.
Keith Burnell, who rushed for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win over Connecticut will become the starter next week against Western Michigan.

Science and Mother Nature have worked together to create the first ever killer whale calf born as a result of artificial insemination.

After four hours of labor last night, a 25 year old whale became a mother. The calf measures between six and seven feet long, and weighs between 300 and 350 pounds. Moments after birth the calf instinctively swam to the surface to take its first breath. There's no word yet on whether it is a girl or a boy.
