Avlanche owner Kelvin Bowles is doing more than celebrating... he's helping to start a new bank.
Bowles and about a dozen Franklin County residents put their heads together to create the new Franklin Community Bank which will make a public offering on Wednesday.
The bank will be located at the CATCE Center in Rocky Mount and is expected to open early next year.
Virginia Home Furnishings owner Joel Shepherd is also one of the organizers.

As many boys as girls become victims, but the study found boys got less attention from both law enforcement and social services. A rabies scare in Bedford has officials there urging city residents to avoid stray animals and keep their own pets' vaccinations up to date.
A Bedford man is undergoing treatment, because he was scratched by a stray cat over the weekend.
The animal later tested positive for rabies.
It's the second case in Bedford since July, and the tenth in the Lynchburg district this year.

Police say the driver of this pickup suffered a diabetic problem, lost control of his truck and crashed into a home owned by James Jones.

John Lindsey goes yard on Gobble in the bottom of the second inning with this solo shot to left center field to tied the game at 1-all. Still in the second, third baseman Seth Taylor would take a cut a Gobble and whack this 3-1 offering off the lights. Salem is in front 2-to-1 after a 2. But this one was far from finished. In the top of the third, Corey Hart's rbi plates Jeremy Dodson who just beats the Tino Sanchez tag. It's now 2-all. Salem went ahead 3-to-2 in the bottom of the inning only to lose the lead again as the Blue Rocks scored on a homer and a wild pitch to take a 4-to-3 lead. But in the bottom of the 6th frame, Lindsey took care of business as he takes another Gobble pitch out of the stadium with a massive homer. The two run shot is his second of the game and Salem is now in front 5-to-4. That turned out to be the game winner, but the Avalanche added an insurance run in the 8th as Dan Phillips hit the team's fourth homer of the game to make it 6-to-4 Salem. Rick Cercy came on in the 7th inning and shut down the Blue Rocks the rest of the way as he seals the deal with a strikeout in the 9th. Lee Suggs' surgery to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament will not take place this week.

Suggs, who was milling around with his teammates on the sideline Saturday is progressing well when it come to reducing the swelling in the knee, and regaining much of his range of motion. The Tech training staff says early next week is now the likely time period for the surgery with next Wednesday set as the target date.
