By now you know about the hijacked commercial airliners driven into the World Trade Center towers.
Many Virginians have already begun to gather in prayer and mourning for victims and their families.

Jennifer Miele visited St. Johns Episcopal Church for an afternoon service today, Jen.
Keith, several members of St. Johns have been touched by this tragedy.

They clung together praying to hear from loved ones in New York.

Mary Lou Trey planned on calling her son to wish him a happy birthday tonight.
Instead, she'll spend the day in church praying and on the phone trying just to get in touch with him.
He works as an insurance agent in the World Trade Center. [NAT SOUND] [RUNS05]
Reverend John Perris has been working diligently to bring his parish together in prayer.
He too has personal worries on his mind... his mother works for a law firm just blocks from the site of the initial attack.

Initially one of shock, Keith.. but within hours, people began to realize their worst fears had been realized.. and the call for prayers began to go out.

Across town, at BWXT.. a supplier of the Navy's nuclear fuel and a potential target itself.. 1900 employees were sent home early as a precaution.

As the full force of the tragedy became known, thousands gathered to pray.. for the victims, for their families and for guidance.

Earlier today-- the office of Emergency Medical Services in Richmond also asked the flight crew to be on standby in the event they are needed in Northern Virginia.

The local Red Cross has put more than 50 volunteers on alert for a possible deployment to the disaster areas.
That comes as many residents are already turning out in full force to donate blood.

And they waited --dozens at times -- for their turn to give blood.
It's a humanitarian effort the Red Cross is hoping will save lives.

The Red Cross is also gearing-up to hold emergency blood drives.
And encourages anyone who's at least 17 years old, 110-pounds -- and in good health to donate.
For many donors like Jason Bingham --who felt helpless watching the disaster unfold miles away --this is his way of helping out.
