Commercial flights at the Roanoke Regional Airport are still grounded for now.

There had been some hope that flights would resume at Roanoke Regional Airport yesterday afternoon. Stranded passengers returned rental cars and rebooked their flights. But, despite the fact that the FAA partially lifted the flight ban on CERTAIN flights, Roanoke was NOT given the go-ahead.

In other local news, fire damaged a building at a Franklin County school.

Officials say workers who were remodeling an old cafeteria at Callaway Elementary School yesterday morning touched off the fire.
The building isn't attached to the school.
But the students did go through a fire drill just in case.
No one was hurt.

American flags are flying in Lee Plaza in downtown Roanoke and lining the streets on lamp posts.

It was Mayor Ralph Smith's idea. He suggested decking out the city- -on the day after the attack- -with the kind of display usually reserved for holidays. He said he always tries to pull the best out of any situation.
Mayor Smith said the red, white and blue display may continue for a few days.

In the New River Valley, businesses lowered the stars and stripes to half staff.
Several retailers changed their usual commercial message to honor the dead. Others posted expressions of optimism.

Gas prices seem to be remaining steady despite some concern that costs would skyrocket.

A Roanoke man is afraid that his brother may have died in the attack on the World Trade Center.

Thomas McKeon, the director of the Roanoke Higher Education Center, says his younger brother, Barry, worked on the 95th floor of the second tower that was hit.
He was on a phone, talking to his wife, just before the hijacked airliner crashed into the building several floors below his office.
McKeon says his brother hasn't been heard from since hanging up his cellphone.
