At least 27 television networks will set aside regularly scheduled programs Friday to simulcast a benefit for the attack victims.

Stars donating their time include Tom Cruise, Bruce Springsteen, Julia Roberts and George Clooney.

Democrat Mark Warner continues to hold his lead over Republican Mark Earley.

The latest News-7 Mason Dixon poll shows "little change in the race over the summer."
Warner was up by seven points in March, by five points over Earley in June, and now has a six point edge over the former Attorney General. Libertarian Candidate Bill Redpath showed up for the first time in September with one percent.
Warner's strength lies in Northern Virginia where 53-percent of those polled say they'd vote for him now, compared to Earley's 35-percent. Warner is also strong in Roanoke and Southwest Virginia with a 10-percent margin separating the two candidates in our region. Earley is ahead in other parts of the state but by slimmer margins than other Republicans have shown in recent elections.

Maryland authorities are investigating the death of a Lynchburg man who was brought to a firehouse.
The dead man has been identified as 41-year-old Bradford William Wright.
Police say a man and a woman drove to a Montgomery County Maryland firehouse just before dawn today and requested help for a
man in the back seat.
Rescue personnel determined that the man was dead.
Before police arrived, the man and woman drove away.
Police later identified and interviewed the couple, but did not release their names or say how Wright may have died.

A 15-year-old was also found inside the home in possession of marijuana.

One of Friday Football Extra's brightest stars is increasing his stock. Lord Botetourt receiver Jared White was officially offered an appointment to West Point Tuesday night.

The educational package that White has been offered at West point is worth a quarter of a million dollars and would mean a nine year commitment to the Army. Jared, who has also been offered a verbal scholarship from Miami of Ohio, says he will make his decision at the end of this school year.

((Just how bad do teams want in to the Blue Ridge District. At four o'clock this afternoon, Cave Spring high school began it's presentation in front of the VHSL executive committee to petition for entrance into the district next year in girls basketball and every other sport except football which would remain in triple A. Here are some words from some of the nine team members on how things are going after a month.
William Fleming escaped with an overtime win against Northside Tuesday night and the fans stormed the floor in celebration. The Colonels are a top the Blue Ridge at 4 and OH while Northside is 3 and 1.

Fleming head coach Cynthia Brown likes her new district and not just because her Colonels are in first place. Her daughter, Tonia, is at Wake Forest and will play her first season this winter.

Pulaski is 3 and 1 in district play. Head coach Buddy Farris says, he likes the Blue Ridge and the seasonal change, playing in the fall means no snow days and the competition is as good as he has seen, an impressive statement considering, Pulaski's rich playoff tradition.
