One year ago tonight, Ronald Gay walked into a predominatly gay bar in Roanoke and began shooting. He killed one person and injured six others. Tonight, family, survivors, and the community are gathering for a memorial service at the Backstreet Cafe.

A judge in Salem has DENIED an attempt by Democrats to hold upcoming house elections according to old district maps.

Democrats sued the state over redistricting this year, claiming that the Republican-led General Assembly drew the lines to reduce the influence of minority voters. They say it was done by concentrating minority neighborhoods into fewer districts. Judge Richard Pattisall says he is NOT convinced that the new lines need to be changed before November's election. Pattisall says he will consider the testimony of both sides starting tomorrow to decide if any further action needs to be taken.

Additional support is now available for victims of September 11th's attack on America. President Bush has declared Virginia a disaster area. That means individuals and businesses are eligible for federal funding to help recover from the terrorist attack on the Pentagon. Bush issued a similar declaration for New York City.

Some area firefighters let their boots do the talking today.

More than a hundred firefighters used their boots to collect money today at the Town Square Kroger in Roanoke.
The money will go to the fallen firefighters fund, set up to assist the families of firefighters who were lost in New York.

An 18 foot truck is parked in front of the Walmart at the Valley View Mall in Roanoke.
Employees are taking donations until Tuesday.
They're accepting clothes, medical supplies, hard hats, and cots for firefighters to sleep on.
The Salvation Army plans to pick up the truck and drive it to New York by the end of next week.
If you would like to make a donation, you can drop it off at the service desk in Walmart.

Residents at a Montgomery County nursing home got quite a scare last night.

A mobile home located next to the Meadowbrook nursing home in Shawsville went up in flames just before ten last night.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof.
The Fire Chief believes the fire could have been electrical in nature.
The mobile was used as a storage facility.
No one was injured and the nursing home was not evacuated.
