Plans to renovate the Old N & W passenger station in Roanoke got a big boost yesterday, thanks to a state grant for almost 500-thousand dollars.

The grant comes from the Commonwealth Transportation Board, which allocated federal funds for the work.
So far, backers have raised almost four million dollars for the station, which will house the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and a museum dedicated to the work of celebrated railroad photographer O. Winston Link.

Roanoke County firefighters have been busy at the Sans Souci apartments along Garst Mill Road this morning. They were called out about an hour ago when heavy smoke was reported coming out of one of the units. We do not yet have further details available.

It's only the length of a football field, but a Montgomery County driveway is at the center of a court battle between a land owner and a lumber business.

Mary Ann Capp says Turman Lumber Company is trespassing when its logging trucks travel this road on her property.


Trucks have been using it since July to reach a logging operation up the mountain.
The company says it has "legal right of way" to use it.

People who take the bus around Blacksburg may find reduced service when the new year arrives.

Blacksburg Transit plans to discontinue service at 10 P-M Monday through Saturday .. and end all service on Sundays.

Officials say the cuts are in response to a budget deficit brought on in part by rising fuel prices and lack of grant money. Public hearings on the proposal are scheduled October 9th and 10th.
