Plans to renovate the Old N & W passenger station in Roanoke got a big boost yesterday, thanks to a state grant for almost 500-thousand dollars.

The grant comes from the Commonwealth Transportation Board, which allocated federal funds for the work.
So far, backers have raised almost four million dollars for the station, which will house the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and a museum dedicated to the work of celebrated railroad photographer O. Winston Link.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board has distributed two million dollars for a dozen different projects in western Virginia.
That figure also includes 269- thousand dollars for the Roanoke River Greenway in Salem and Roanoke County.

Developer Steve Scott put the fiberglass trio by the road after the planning commission said his Westlake Commons sign violated a county ordinance.
Scott borrowed the creatures from neighbor Joe Altadonna, who ran afoul of the planning commission with his eight-foot rooster.

Roanoke County firefighters have been busy at the Sans Souci apartments along Garst Mill Road this morning. They were called out about an hour ago when heavy smoke was reported coming out of one of the units. We do not yet have further details available.

The Nationwide crackdown on air safety will close Virgina Tech's airport during tomorrow's game.

It's only the length of a football field, but a Montgomery County driveway is at the center of a court battle between a land owner and a lumber business.

Mary Ann Capp says Turman Lumber Company is trespassing when its logging trucks travel this road on her property.

Trucks have been using it since July to reach a logging operation up the mountain.
The company says it has "legal right of way" to use it.

Turman Lumber's President Mike Turman did not want to be interviewed on camera. But he did Say that this is a civil matter for the courts to decide and that his business has the right of way. The case goes to court October 11th.

Roanoke County firefighters were summoned to battle smoke and flames at the Sans Souci apartments along Garst Mill Road this morning. We do not have any further details at this time, but we do have a crew at the scene, and we will pass along further information on News 7 at Noon.

People who take the bus around Blacksburg may find reduced service when the new year arrives.

Blacksburg Transit plans to discontinue service at 10 P-M Monday through Saturday .. and end all service on Sundays.

Officials say the cuts are in response to a budget deficit brought on in part by rising fuel prices and lack of grant money. Public hearings on the proposal are scheduled October 9th and 10th.

But sales were so good, they've decided to stay through the end of the year.

The State Fair runs through next weekend at the Richmond Raceway Complex.
Plans to move to a new, permanent fair complex east of Richmond have run into financial and legal challenges that should keep the fair in place for another few years.
Twenty new attractions, including stunt bikes and skateboards, are being offered.
