No rain today, but plenty of excitement as Elliott Sadler and the Wood Brothers even led early in the event. Sadler finished 17th. Dale Earnhardt Junior started on the outside pole, but was all over the place today he finished 27th. Ricky Rudd ran strong for most of the day and was battling for the lead when he and rookie Kurt Busch tangled in turns one and two on the restart. Rudd's right front fender was damaged, but he rolled on. That is until lap 396 when the Havoline Ford lost an engine. Rudd finished 39th. His departure meant the Yates racing banner would have to be carried by Dale Jarrett, but he had to deal with Bobby Hamilton. But when the 12th and final caution came out, Hamilton, Jarrett and Ricky Craven found themselves behind Kevin Harvick, who elected not to pit. On old tires Harvick had trouble keeping pace and Hamilton tapped him coming out of turn two. Craven took advantage of the incident and slipped inside them both. Harvick meanwhile decided to retaliate and hit Hamilton in turn three. Harvick was penalized a lap for rough driving. Craven then found himself trying to hold off the spring race winner at Martinsville in Jarrett. The two would duel the final four laps in one of Martinsville's most memorable finishes.
