(( A FIFTH day of blistering attacks on Taliban positions in northern Afghanistanand it's beginning to have the Pentagon's desired effect.
This man broke ranks, and defected to the opposition Northern Alliance, Taliban bullets chasing him all the way.
Taliban defector: 'Yes, I said to my friend hurry up run.' But the humanitarian situation is also getting worse. Doctors in Kabul say they are running out of gasoline for their generators and operating by gas light. 'It's impossible to workfor the patients.' And the Pentagon is concerned the Taliban will try to turn this air-dropped food aid...into a public relations weapon, by poisoning it. Defense officials say leaflets will be dropped and announcements made on local radio, warning Afghans to be alert to anything unusual. And casualties from US bombing raids are coming home here, to Pakistan. Thousands turned out to honor the leader of more than twenty Pakistani militants, killed in Kabul by an American bomb. Thousands more here say they too are ready to cross into Afghanistan to join the holy warbut Pakistan's government intends to block them at the border. Meanwhile, a conference of Afghan exiles wrapped up a two-day meeting in Peshawar, Pakistan, on what a post-Taliban Afghanistan might look like. They endorsed the ex-king Zahir Shah, and spoke of the importance of UN involvement.
They also asked foreigners who have caused their country to be bombedto leave - a roundabout reference to Osama bin Laden. Diplomats here say the problem isthese aren't the people in power inside Afghanistan - the guns still belong the Taliban and the Northern Alliance, and no one here had any specific ideas as to how to get the Taliban OUT of poweror keep the Northern Alliance from seizing it. One thing they could all agree on - the bombing isn't doing their people any good, and they asked the United States to stop it. KD, CBS News, Islamabad))
