Good evening folks and welcome to Friday Football Extra. It is week number nine of the regular season, and in some places it felt like nine degrees this evening with the wind chill. Settle in and warm up with us as tonight's road trip takes us from Gretna to New Castle to Danville.
[GRAPHIC=PH/FLEMING]

We begin this evening just down the street from the WDBJ-7 studios at Victory Stadium where Patrick Henry and William Fleming hooked up in a non-district game. School administrators moved the kickoff up from 7:30 to 5pm for security reasons.

As a result, it was senior day for the Patriots as Patrick Henry honored its 11 senior players on this year's squad. Fleming would salute them with a score on this drive. Lorenzo Lewis will bust one off the left side and score from nine yards out. The Colonels take a 7-to-nothing left with 7:58 left in the first half. By that time most folks still hadn't gotten off from work, so as you would expect the crowd size was down considerably from that of a normal Noel C. Taylor Classic. The folks who were there would see PH take the lead on their next possession. Jermaine Myers goes off the right side, gets past the defense, and he will take it to the house on a 46 yard dash. Myers added the conversion and the Patriots are on top 8-to-7 with 6:10 left in the first. Fleming would tip the see-saw contest back in its favor. Taurus Boyd fires the pass deep to Rashad Hamidullah. The ball is in the view finder as Hamidullah makes the catch - and right then the referee slams into our photographer Greg Moore. But he fights off the block and gets the 43 yard score. It's 14-to-8 Fleming. Fleming would score one more early. C.J. Bannister heads off the right side and scoots 50 yards for the score. The Colonels take a 27-to-8 lead after the first quarter and the rout is on. Fleming would finish off the first half with one more tally. With just 14 seconds to play Boyd swings one out to Demetrius Grant. He picks up his blockers

and goes 25 yards. The Colonels beat PH in today's twi-light matinee at the Stadium 40 to 14.

The Junior ROTC raised the flag before things got underway tonight in Danville. Franklin County has a first and 10 on GW's 29 yards line. LeBryan Patterson, the player of the week from two week's ago goes right up the middle for 15 yards inside the red zone. Two plays later, Patterson will finish what he starts as he goes the final three yards up the middle. It's 6-to-nothing after the missed kick. GW would take a 7-to-6 lead and then look for more. Quarterback John Fulton passes to his right to Brian Martin. He will haul in the pass and pick up 24 yards on the play. Fulton would then run to his left and score from the 10 to complete the drive. George Washington is now on top of Franklin County 14-to-6.

Escorted by the her brother Cecil, Amelia Renee Cruise was crowned tonight's homecoming queen in Gretna! The Hawks then went out and crowned the Governors. Rico Haynes takes off, break through the entire Nelson County defense and outrun everyone in route to an 81 yard touchdown. The high flying Hawks are on top 7-to-0 in the first. Now up 14-to-nothing, coach Robert Prunty goes to Rico again. This time Haynes will take the ball, breaks a few more tackles and chalk up 51 yards on another score and the Hawk has landed in PIttsylvania County it's 20-to-nothing Gretna. With just over a minute to go in the half - Marlon Moon, a player of the week from last season, punches in the TD from a yard out. It's now 28-to-nothing. Nothing seemed to work for the Governors.

Welcome back to Friday Football Extra as we now turn our attention to Joel Hicks and his high powered Pulaski County Cougars.

[SUPER=51-Pulaski Co./Alleghany vs. Pulaski Co.; :00]

It was senior night in Pulaski as parents of players, cheerleaders and band members were all honored before the game - as well they should be. It was also band night as the young musicians from Dublin Middle school joined in the festivities. On Alleghany's opening drive, the Mounties also would have to face the music as Josh Calfee picks off the pass from Matt Henderson and puts the ball back in the hands of the offense. Actually he put it right back in his own hands as he goes straight up the middle on the next play and hits the endzone scoring from 48 yards out. It's 7-to-nothing Pulaski. On the next possession for the Cougars - Jeremy Porter the other handful in that backfield gets the rocks rolling up the middle and he scores from 25 yards out to make it a 14-to-nothing game in favor of the home team. Later in the first, it's Porter again. No one can catch up to him. This time he's taking it to the zone from 82 yards away. The Cougars are now in front 21-to-nothing and Porter is averaging over 50 yards a carry.
[SUPER=52-Alleghany/12/Pulaski Co./62;]

The Cougars clinch the Blue Ridge with the 62 to 12 win, although this young man was more interested in a little chocolate and little nap.

The hot chocolate was flowing freely at the Northside concession stand tonight. One of the cups even found its way to former Hokie Dave Meyer - a Northside assistant who was trying to warm up his team which was down 14-to-7 to Salem at the half. The Northside defense gets hot as Salem quarterback Billy Cameron is hit as he releases the pass. It is picked off by the Vikings' Phillip Watkins near midfield. He will return it down the far sidelines, past the Salem players into the endzone to tie it up at 14-all. But the Spartans would regain control of the game as Cameron gets the ball to Matt Collins to put Salem within field goal distance in the third. Nic Schmitt will come on for the 36 yard attempt, and his kick is up and good. The Spartans take a 17-to-14 lead.
[SUPER=52-Salem/17/Northside/14;]

Salem would then grind out the clock with Reico Jordan picking up 46 yards on this carry just short of the goal line. Salem moves to 5-and-3 with the 17-to-14 win.

18 year veteran referee Randy Likens presents the coin tonight as Byrd would win the toss and opt to kick. The action gets started early as Byrd with the ball at mid field lets quarterback Jeff Highfill lay the pass up hitting Jerome Mann heading down the far sideline and he'll pick up 18 yards on the play. A few plays later, Highfill gets the handoff to Marcus English he goes over the left side and takes it in for the 14 yard TD run. Byrd led 7 to nothing. But the Cavaliers would fight back from the 20 yard line as quarterback Eric Driscoll fires the ball deep to the corner of the end zone and its pull down by Jared White for the 20 yard score. The extra point failed to make it 7 to 6 Byrd. The Terriers get the ball back. Highfill hands off to Marcus English he goes around the left end gets into the open field running 32 yards before being pulled down.

The conditions in the New River were just a bit brisk tonight. We pick it up with the Indians already on top 24-to-nothing in the third. Christiansburg is looking to come back but Matt Crumpton has his pass picked of by Ryan Jones and he returns it 26 yards to set up more Blacksburg points. Brett Smith will then keep and score from the 6 to make it a 31-to-nothing in favor of the Indians in the third. The Blue Demons put together a nice 72 yard drive and decide to go for it on a fourth and 6. Crumpton find Irvin White in the corner of the endzone for the score. Christiansburg gets on the board. It's 31-to-6. The Blue Demons are looking for more on the Indians' reserves in the fourth. Crumpton tosses the ball up, but Cory Price picks it off and gets a great block from freshman Byron Hurdle. And after making that block, Hurdle gets to play quarterback. That's how it works in Dave Crist's system.
