Governor Jim Gilmore held a conference call to put the Republican National Committee spin on things.
But he also hinted broadly that the state's fiscal health is much worse now than it was a year ago, when he was insisting the car tax phase-out move to 100 percent by the time he leaves office.
No matter what he puts in his December budget, the new governor has to solve that puzzle.

Mark Warner's win, or for that matter the Democrat in New Jersey, is NO bellwether on the Republican party.

The old City Hall building in Covington is one step closer to the wrecking ball.
A group known as the Friends of old city hall today failed to obtain a permanent injunction to prevent the demolition of the building.

Election results are now in from Patrick County, where election officials had to deal with hundreds of write-in votes.
The big problem was a school board race in which the only candidate on the ballot was called up to active military service. Three others then started write-in campaigns.

The votes were finally tallied today, and Bobby Mangrum won the battle of the write-ins in the Smith River District. Even though he withdrew, Douglas Dunlap still got 80 votes.
