An old store at Valley View Mall has gotten a make-over.

After Nine months and seven million dollars, the newly renovated Belk is officially open for businesses.
The store added 23 thousand square feet of space, not to mention new cosmetics, fashion accessories and shoe departments.
That along with new lights, new floors and wider isles.
Belk management says the store has felt the effects of a slowing economy, but feels the Roanoke market has major growth potential.

A Montgomery County man died yesterday afternoon after being thrown from his car.

State Police say Larry Wayne Dalton's Chevrolet pickup truck ran off road and overturned... he was thrown from the vehicle. The accident happened on Tyler Road in Montgomery County just after 4:30 yesterday afternoon. Dalton died about an hour later at New River Valley Medical Center.

Firefighters had a brush fire to deal with in Roanoke yesterday. The fire generated forty foot flames and damaged a dozen cars.

Trees and brush near the Wyndham Hotel caught fire shortly after one o'clock yesterday, and the flames spread quickly.
Firefighters reported flames 40 to 50 feet high as they approached.
The hotel was evacuated briefly, and no one was injured... but a dozen cars were damaged and officials estimate the damage at 100- thousand dollars.
No word yet on the cause.

Authorities are on the scene of a tractor trailer accident in Bedford.
Officials say the vehicle apparently got stuck beneath a railroad crossing on Fourth Street.
The tractor trailer is reportedly leaking gallons of transformer oil.
A Haz-Mat crew has been called in.

The big problem was a school board race in which the only candidate on the ballot was called up to active military service. Three others then started write-in campaigns.

The votes were finally tallied yesterday, and Bobby Mangrum won the battle of the write-ins in the Smith River District. Even though he withdrew, Douglas Dunlap still got 80 votes.
