Forestry officials say now is a "critical" time for the threat of forest fires.

Dry conditions have contributed to dozens of brush fires like this one that scorched nearly 300 acres in Appomattox County last month.
Foresters are also concerned about thousands of hunters heading into the woods for deer season.

A Henry County man accused of killing his best friend has been found guilty of a lesser charge.

George Lincoln Hopkins was charged with first degree murder for killing Larry Thomas Bennett last March.

Prosecutors said Hopkins stabbed Bennett 51 times with a piece of glass from a broken coffee table during a fight.

The defense argued Hopkins was drunk and that it was therefore not premediated.
The jury agreed and found Hopkins guilty of second- degree murder.
The jury recommended a 40 year sentence.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for January.

The flames can be seen for miles away in Southwest Roanoke County.
Fire officials say the blaze began on the parkway, then quickly spread to a wider area.
Nearly a dozen residents have been evacuated so far.

Authorities say the dry, windy conditions are making their battle against the flames even tougher. Fire officials say 40 people are on working the blaze, and the Department of Forestry is assisting.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Clinton Avenue around six thirty last night. When they arrived, the back side of the home was engulfed in flames. The couple who live in the house escaped with their pets. The amount of damage has not yet been determined.
