Firefighters are still working to contain a massive forest fire on Bent Mountain in Roanoke County.
The fire has caused extensive damage along Poage's Valley Road off Route 221. About 80 percent of the fire is under control- But as Justin McLeod shows us, their fight is far from over.

But getting to this point wasn't easy.

It hasn't been this dry in nearly twenty years.
The extremely dry conditions and high winds allowed this fire on Bent Mountain to consume nearly two hundred acres of land.
Fire officials don't know what caused it but say it probably didnt take much.

And a huge fire like this one required more than a hundred firefighters to battle it.

Two helicopters also carried water to the burning mountainside until sunset.

Firefighters hope this fire line will help.
They're also hoping to get a break from mother nature.

Kindergartners through 7th graders at Eastern Elementary Middle School dressed in red, white and blue. All 500 gathered outside to form the American flag. A picture of the kids as old glory is being made into a postcard-- It'll be sold to benefit terrorist attack victims.

The students also presented an 18-hundred dollar check to the Red Cross. It was money collected through fundraisers over the past two-months.

Extremely dry conditions and high winds have added to fuel to the flames.
At this point, the fire is about 80-percent contained.
However, firefighters say their fight is far from over.
V-DOT is urging motorists to be cautious when traveling on route 2-20 in Franklin and Roanoke counties -- -- And those driving on route 2-21 --because the smoke could affect visibility.
