Firefighters have battled many dangerous forest fires in western Virginia this week. And even though tbe fires are now under control - they are NOT completely out of the woods, yet...

The Dickenson Ridge Fire in Bath County is burning about three miles southwest of Millboro Springs. 200-acres have been charred. The blaze, which started two days ago, is being fought by three "20-person" crews and local fire departments. There's no word on a cause.

Two other fires that have burned more than one thousand acres a piece are also contained. The "Hickory Run Fire" in Page County and the Heard Mountain Fire in Albemarle County are both in the mop-up stage.

The 355th annual Indian tax tribute to the Governor is the final one Jim Gilmore will receive.
Chiefs of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey tribes paid tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore with words and gifts today.

30 million Americans have started their Thanksgiving holiday away from home.
But this year, the choice of travel by plane, train, or automobile was different for some.

An Alford plea means she does not admit guilt but agrees there's enough evidence to convict her.

Firefighters rescued an animal from a burning home late last night.

Flames could be seen shooting from the back end of the home on Riverland Road, when Roanoke firefighters arrived just after 11 PM. No one was home the time of the blaze, but as we mentioned, one animal was saved. No word yet on damages or cause.

Job losses and falling revenues are creating some major budget troubles in Henry County. So the county's School Board is now considering a controversial proposal .. that could close some schools and consolidate others.

Officials say declining enrollment, falling sales tax revenues, and the state budget crunch have left them with a shortfall that could exceed one million dollars.
They're now reviewing a plan that would combine Laurel Park and Magna Vista High Schools at Magna Vista, and combine Fieldale-Collinsville and Bassett High Schools at the Bassett site.
The plan would also bring other changes that include closing three elementary schools.
