A recent poll of 380 property owners along the Avenue show they support the move by a vote of 115 to 67... nearly a third of them did not respond to the survey.
Preservationists have been pushing to designate a three-mile stretch of Rivermont as a historic district.
Supporters say it would help prevent older buildings from being torn down or radically altered and would also boost overall property values.
Opponents say historic districts infringe on property owners' basic rights.
City council is expected to discuss the survey results at its work session next Tuesday.
Council could vote on the district sometime next year.

Falwell is challenging a centuries-old part of the state constitution that prohibits churches from incorporating and from owning more than 15 acres of land.
The laws were originally created to keep churches from becoming too powerful.. only Virginia and West Virginia still have them on the books.
Lynchburg currently limits church property to 50 acres or less.. next week city council will decide whether to do away with the ordinance in order to have the city dropped as a defendant in Falwell's lawsuit.

((Movie Review 'Spy Game"
Universal
"Spy Game" grabs attention from the opening minutes
and never lets go. There is plenty of action, but much
of the conflict is a mind game played between an aging
operative and the CIA brass.
Robert Redford is at his best as Nathan Muir. On the
day he is supposed to retire from the CIA, he finds
out an agent he trained, Tom Bishop-played by Brad
Pitt- has been imprisoned in China for espionage and
will be shot the next morning. The Agency white
collars don't want to interfere for political reasons,
and are willing to let Bishop die. After all, the
operation he was involved with wasn't one of theirs.
Muir manipulates his way into the meeting where
Bishop's fate is being discussed. He tells the Task
Force how he met Bishop and tries to convince them to
negotiate for his release. Much of the movie is told
in action packed flashbacks: in Vietnam where Muir
recruited Bishop for an assassination; then to
Germany, where Bishop learns some hard lessons about
his chosen career; and finally to Beirut, where a
failed mission turned Bishop against the Agency and
against Muir. Now Muir is Bishop's only chance, and
the movie does a good job of building suspense as to
what, if anything, Muir will be able to do to save
Bishop.
"Spy Game" is an engrossing action film, much of which
looks very like the nightly news of the past several
years.
Also, for those still severely affected by the visions
of September 11, there are some scenes that may be
troublesome, especially a car bomb destroying an
apartment building in Beirut.
"Spy Game" is Rated R for language and Violence. Grade
