Fighting forest fires is costly. Now the federal government will pitch to help pay for fighting fires in Virgnia.

The state budgeted 500-thousand dollars to fight fires this fiscal year, but has already spent about twice that ... mostly fighting recent blazes in southwest Virginia.
More than 800 fires have broken out since October 15th and charred more 8-thousand acres statewide.
The U-S Forest Service is charging Virginia 35-thousand dollars a day for sending fire crews from western states.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will likely cover 75-percent of that cost.

Halifax County Deputies have made another arrest in a Thanksgiving Day murder case.
20 year old Quindell L. Williams of South Boston turned himself in yesterday afternoon. He's charged with the first degree murder of Thomas Jackson.
Deputies say Jackson was shot outside American Legion Post 99 early last Thursday morning.
Three other men had already been arrested.

The F-A-A approved the airport's plan to open the lot on the condition that each vehicle be searched before being allowed to park. The lot's been closed since September 11th. You're advised to enter through the *long-term* parking entrance and pull up to the vehicle inspection point. Only cars that pass the inspection will be allowed to park in the short-term lot. You won't be charged for the first 30-minutes. A similar system is already being used in other airports around the country.

According to the Express, center Mike Omicioli returned today from his call up at the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears. Omicioli played in three of four games while with the Bears and did not have a point. He is Roanoke's leading scorer.
Vern Fiddler, Roanoke's other center, has not come back from his AHL call up to the Norfolk Admirals and no time table has been set for his return.

Rosemarie O'Shaughnessy posted a sign last week after the city told her to either move the house or it would be torn down.
