Between three and four hundred workers at Lynchburg's S-C-I Systems plant are out of a job today- victims of a downturn in the cellphone communications market.

S-C-I took over Ericsson's cell-phone infrastructure business last year... It employs about 12-hundred people at the Candlers Mountain Road facility.
A corporate spokesman says the layoffs include both salaried and hourly workers, and that more than half of them volunteered to take the company's severance package.
S-C-I says a reduced demand for cell phone base systems forced the reduction in the workforce.

The latest unemployment numbers are not good.. Analysts say they seem to cast doubt that an economic rebound is
under way.
The jobless rate rose to five-point-seven percent- the highest level in six years.
331-thousand jobs were trimmed from payrolls in November.
That's on top of an October decline of 468-thousand-
The government says nearly every major industry lost jobs.

One of the largest employers in Clifton Forge will shut down next week.

130 people will be losing their jobs when Telegate U-S-A closes Wednesday.
City officials have been searching for a new employer to move into the building.
So far, 12 different companies have expressed interest.

Authorities in Henry County have charged a suspect with the murder of a 72 year old man earlier this week.

29-year old Quentin Wayne Hairston of Martinsville is accused of the robbery and capital murder of Ralph Alvin Hubbard.
Hubbard's body was found on the side of the road across from Clearview Elementary School Monday night.
His pickup truck was found in another location 20 minutes later burning in a ravine.

(( Narr: December 7th is a day survivors of the Pearl harbor attack look forward to - but also one they look back on with a sense of fear and dread.

Narr: It was 7;50 on a Sunday morning when the attack began. Today 60 years later several hundred survivors returned to the harbor and as American fighter jets roared overhead...they paused to remember the more than 23 hundred killed. More than 11,00 sailors remain entombed in the U.S.S. Arizona on the ocean floor.

Narr: During the ceremonies there were passing references to the September 11 attacks. There is a feeling here that american's can understand our history through the recent tragedy.
