Police say they will probably charge a woman who drove the wrong way on Route 581, injuring a family in a head-on collision.

It happened after 7 last night.
Police say 60-year-old Carol McKenna got into the northbound lanes of 581 .. heading south .. at Orange Avenue.
She drove the wrong way for the better part of a mile before striking a northbound car with two adults and two children inside near Elm Avenue.
Rescuers had to pry open the vehicle to get some of the victims out.
39-year-old Anthony Early, his wife, Yvonne, and their two children, ages 7 and 10, were taken to the hospital with critical, but not life-threatening, injuries.
The accident blocked two of the three northbound lanes as they approached Elm Avenue .. and backed up traffic in both directions.

Less than two hours later, another accident blocked off Route 460 east of the city .. near Cloverdale Road.
County police say a van, a pickup truck and a car were involved in this one .. but since vehicles came to rest in both directions of traffic, investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
Authorities say there were minor injuries.
Traffic was backed up both ways on the busy roadway until the wreckage was cleared away.

The district believes the closing and consolidation of schools will save as much 3-point-4 million dollars next year.

Voters in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, have decided to take money matters into their own hands - and RAISE their own taxes.
Greenbrier residents overwhelmingly approved a 15 million dollar bond issue on Saturday. The tax increase will pay for a new (RON suh vurt) Ronceverte Elementary School.

Investigators in Montgomery County may have a breakthrough in a 22 year old missing persons case.

Last week, skeletal remains of a man were discovered off Meadowbrook Road just outside Blacksburg.
Sources say investigators suspect the bones are those of a Virginia Tech student reported missing in January of 1979.

A much-anticipated report on Virginia's death penalty will be released today in Richmond.
The Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission is the General Assembly's investigative agency.
It has spent the last year studying how capital punishment is administered in the state.

The town of New Castle is grieving over the loss of its mayor.
James Robert Kibler passed away Friday, ending 21 years of service to the town.
Kibler died after battling throat cancer. He was 62.
There are now three council members and a vice-mayor left to govern.
They must appoint a new mayor within 60 days--- he or she will serve until the May elections.
