The Federal Reserve still thinks the economy needs help. As expected, the central bank lowered interest rates today by a quarter of a point.
The statement issued by the Federal Open Market Committee says it still views the economy as soft.

Virginia Senator George Allen and two other Senators are proposing a new economic stimulus package.

Allen says partisanship has held up previous ones, but this package should please both democrats and republicans.

The bill would increase the per-child tax credit from 600 dollars to a thousand.
It would provide five billion dollars in emergency grants to states that need to set up worker-retraining programs for laid-off employees.
The bill would extend unemployment benefits to 39 weeks from 26.
And it would provide families with an education tax credit.

Negotiations on another stimulus package broke down last week as both parties accused the other of trying to kill the measure.

Governor Gilmore today lifted the burning ban that has been in effect since late October.
Gilmore says the recent rain and the cooler temperatures have reduced the threat of forest fires.
The Virginia Department of Forestry reports that we have had almost a thousand fires that have burned 11 thousand acres since October 15.
The Chief of Forest Protection says Virginians still need to be careful with their outdoor burning.

One person is dead after a car accident in Montgomery County today.

The head-on collision happened on Union Valley Road around 11:30. Authorities say 42-year-old Steve Olinger died when his Chevy Caprice hit a Ford pick-up head-on. Officials say speed and slicked roads are both factors in the crash. The driver of the Ford was not seriously hurt.

After a ten year decline in auto theft.. car theft is on the rise... and it seems theives have some cars they like better than others.

Toyota Camry is number one on the list of the top ten stolen cars in the nation.
The Honda Accord and Oldsmobile Cutlass come in second and third... followed by the Honda Civic and Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee.
The Chevrolet Full Size C-K Pickup, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Caprice, Ford Taurus and Ford F-150 pickup round out the list.

The national Insurance Crime Bureau came up with the list.
It says if you drive theft prone vehicles... you should consider prevention steps.. such as installing a steering wheel lock, an alarm or a starter or fuel disabler.
People who live near port or border communities are also more likely to have their car stolen.

Head coach Al Groh announced today that sophomore quarterback Bryson Spinner will leave UVa and transfer effective in January. Spinner battled fellow sophomore Matt Schaub for playing time most of the season. Spinner finished with 1, 334 passing yards and 14 touchdown tosses and six interceptions but his playing time dropped off considerably as the season went on.
Running back Arlen Harris will also leave UVa in January. The junior played in eight games this season, had 92 carries for 368 yards and one touchdown. Both are expected to transfer to 1-double A schools and a source told news 7 sports that both will go to Delaware, a member of the Atlantic 10 in football.
