A citizens group has been fighting to keep Laurel Park High School, the county's predominately high school, open.
The school board agreed to look into a three high school model but the superintendent said today that idea is not feasible.

A move that could help a lot of recently laid-off workers in Southside is still alive in Washington.
Senator George Allen says a federal economic stimulus package is not dead, though bipartisan agreement fell apart last week.

Allen and two other Senators today presented a new version of the package.
The bill would increase the per-child tax credit from 600 dollars to a thousand.
It would provide five billion dollars in emergency grants to states that need to set up worker- retraining programs for laid-off employees.
The bill would extend unemployment benefits tfrom 26 weeks to 39.
And it would provide families with an education tax credit.

A man Lynchburg police had been searching for for two months has turned himself in to face murder charges.
24- year- old Christopher Brusant Smith surrendered to police this afternoon, nearly two months after he allegedly shot and killed a man on Bedford Avenue.
Police say Smith and another man approached a car and demanded that the occupants give them their wallets.
That's when Smith allegedly shot 20-year-old Michael Moseley once in the side.
He's being held in the Blue Ridge Regional Detention Center on charges of murder, armed robbery and using a firearm in commission of a felony.

as they consider whether Bernard Maurice Walker is guilty of murder. The two sides agreed to that today- -one of several issues settled before the case goes to trial Monday. Attorney David Damico says "the Commonwealth thinks my client brought a pistol to a fist fight. We say it was self defense." Where ever the truth lies, Reaco Hilton died on the floor of the Stop and Save Mini Mart on Melrose Avenue LAST December 24th. Walker was on the lam for almost seven months before his arrest in Atlanta last July.

Governor Jim Gilmore says the recent rain and the cooler temperatures have reduced the threat of forest fires.

The state's Chief of Forest Protection says the fall 2001 fire season was the worst in 30 years.

A head-on collision killed a Montgomery County man today.

Officials say 42-year-old Steve Olinger died at the accident scene on Union Valley Road around 11:30. Authorities say he was driving his Chevy Caprice around a curve and crossed the center line...hitting a Ford pick-up truck. Authorities say slick roads and speed were factors in the crash. The driver of the pick-up truck was not seriously injured.

Students at one school arrived for class this morning to find a car had crashed into the building.

The accident happened around eight-thirty at the Montessori Children's House of Roanoke on Brambleton Avenue.
Police say the driver of a Honda Civic was driving to work near the school when she lost control of her car.
Police believe she may have been speeding.
No one was injured in the accident.
The center for rehab and development at the school was closed today so owners could get a look at the damage.

The nation's largest supermarket operator says they'll be mostly management and clerical positions.
Kroger Company's earnings fell 33 percent in the third quarter as one-time expenses and the sluggish economy took a toll.

Kroger's stock dropped more than three points today.

In August, a woman jumped to her death from the Rivermont Bridge near downtown.
Her father feels if there had been restrictive fencing on the bridge, his daughter would still be alive.
He'll talk about his concerns at tonight's city council meeting.
The issue also came up twenty years ago, when a rash of suicide attempts prompted the city to look into putting a protective barrier on the bridge.
City leaders opted not to spend the money after deciding a barrier would only force a suicidal person to choose another location.

Head coach Al Groh announced today that sophomore quarterback Bryson Spinner will leave UVa and transfer effective in January. Spinner battled fellow sophomore Matt Schaub for playing time most of the season. Spinner finished with 1, 334 passing yards and 14 touchdown tosses and six interceptions but his playing time dropped off considerably as the season went on.
Running back Arlen Harris will also leave UVa in January. The junior played in eight games this season, had 368 rushing yards and one touchdown. Both are expected to transfer to 1-double A school Delaware.
