Good evening. I'm Shannon Young in for Jean Jadhon.
A federal judge today threw out the death sentence of former Black Panther, Mumia Abu-Jamal. (moo-MEE'-ah ah-BOO' jah-MAHL')
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=04-File Tape;]

But the judge upheld Abu-Jamal's conviction for killing a Philadelphia police officer in 1982.
During today's hearing the judge ruled that jurors in the case were given poor guidelines for deliberations.
He also ordered a hearing on the matter to be held within 180 days...if that doesn't occur, Abu-Jamal will get life in prison. Abu-Jamal has received support from a worldwide "Free Mumia" movement which included celebrities and foreign politicians.
Supporters say he's a crusader against racial injustice.
But the widow of officer Daniel Faulkner says she's ``angry, outraged and disgusted'' by the ruling from a judge she describes as ``sick and twisted.''
Abu-Jamal was convicted of shooting Faulkner after the officer pulled over Abu-Jamal's brother in 1981.

Most of the damage from this morning's blaze at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City is apparently confined to a gift shop. There are charred wooden beams on the floor. And, although the roof appears to have caved in, the church's high altar area doesn't appear to be damaged. As many as 200 firefighters battled the flames for about two and a half hours. No injuries are reported. The church has been in various stages of construction for more than a century. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
