More than a billion dollars in the hole, Governor Jim Gilmore is digging himself out with a final budget that promises to leave everyone unhappy.

Gilmore accomplishes that by dipping into the rainy day fund, raiding the transportation trust fund for 600 million dollars, floating a billion dollars in bonds and asking for the state's tobacco settlement money up front.. an idea legislators rejected last year.
State workers would get a pay raise, but college tuition could go up.. and Gilmore stands firm on not raising taxes and getting rid of the car tax by 2004.
Gilmore's last day is January 12th.. legislators will then have the task of enacting his cuts or coming up with a solution of their own.

A daughter is accused of stabbing her mother outside a Roanoke restaurant today.

Police say 24- year old Corinthia King approached her 40- year old mother, Brenda King, outside the China Lite restaurant on Melrose Avenue. Police says that's when the daughter stabbed both her mother and her mother's companion, Jessie Purdue. Both victims suffered multiple stab wounds to the back and were taken to the hospital. Police say the daughter was taken into custody and charged with two counts of malicious wounding.

Behind the play of Jason Williams top ranked Duke overcame a 12 point second half deficit to beat 7-th ranked Kentucky 95 to 92 in overtime.

The Hokies are still searching for a quarterback coach but today head coach Frank Beamer announced the promotion of strong safety/outside linebackers coach Jim Cavanaugh to the position of recruiting coordinator.
Cavanaugh, who will still coach his current positions, takes over the Duties formerly held by Stinespring.
The 53 year old Cavanaugh is completing his sixth season at Tech.

Today Holtz said he is not in the running to become the head football coach at Notre Dame.
Holtz held the Irish job for 11 years and says he was contacted by the school to simply serve as a consultant as the school looked for a new head coach.
Holtz made the announcement as his South Carolina team prepares for the Outback Bowl against Ohio State.

Ferrum Offensive lineman Tim Boothe has been named to the 2001 D3Football-Dot-Com All-america Football Team.

Boothe from Vinton was named to the online organizations honorable mention team. It was the first All America honor for Boothe, who anchored Ferrum's offensive line from his position at center.
Boothe helped the Panthers to three consecutive top 10 finishes in the Division three team rushing category.

When the Chicago Cubs open the 2002 baseball season their lineup will sport 3 100 R-B-I hitters.
Moises Alou has told a newspaper in the Dominican Republic that he's verbally agreed to terms with the Cubbies.
The Free agent outfielder will ink a 3 year 27 million dollar deal. Alou gives Chicago's offense some real power as he will now team up with Sammy Sosa and Fred McGriff, who also hit for over 100 R-B-I's last season.
